Attentive and friendly staff. Nice place with a good feeling to it. Not an impressive selection though. Didn’t try the food. (11.10.2012)

Visited 07.08.2012. Nice venue with good ourdoor seating. The curry wurst was nice, and the staff very attentive. Drawback for low selection, although I enjoyed the Andechser Hell, the others were 3 Schneiders and some other very regular beers. Worth a visit if you are in the vicinity- but if its beer youre looking for I would go somewhere else

About the only thing I’d drink here is the Andechser Helles on tap, but there’s a lot of Berlin character here, even charm, and good food.

Dicke Wirtin is more or less, German slang for ’Thick set Landlady’. A picture of the formidable former lady in question can be found in the rear room, near the corridor towards the toilets. A painting on the rear bar wall and all the menu’s etc, have a unflatering image of her also. Savigny Platz is a lovelly square on Kant Strasse, with its own S Bahn station. Dicke Wirtin is one of many bars and eating places in and around this green platz in Charlottenburg. Not many tourist, well not noisey young ones anyway, just normal people in this area. The front bar is very British in style, big stained wood bar on the right, with bar stools, a much larger back room, with a non-smoking sideroom, mostly for food. Draught beers include Schinder Weiss Dunkel, Engel Dunkel, Flensburger Pils, Berliner Kindl Pils, Veltins Pils, Guiness and Kilkenny, although this is not in any way an Irish bar. My party had a selection, all were in good order, as was the food. Sadly they no longer do the huge ’Charlottenbuger’ which was a monster burger with chips, didn’t ask why. I found this place in 2005 and revisited last week (Jan 2007), how I wish I knew of its exisistance when I lived in the city during the late 1990’s. Big screen TV in the rear/back room, only sport and then only if asked for. Very friendly staff, helpful and happy to speak English if your German is poor, although they are also happy to wait and let you speak pigeon German if you wish. A very good bar, would be impressive no matter where in the world it was. Re-visited in Jan 2012: still a place to find, friendly and pleasant bar with a better than average beer selection for Berlin.

My "local" at my first visit in Berlin, just a 10 minutes walk from my hotel. A typical German kneipe, divided in 2 bar areas(smoke-non smoke) and a dining area at the back. Tv´s showing football for those interested, I was more interested in the beer, quite impressed by the beerlist on tap, nothing special, but good beer from Andechs and other traditional German breweries. Nice decorated walls, even a photo of Jan Otto Johansen, used to be one of his watering holes in Berlin according to the text supporting the picture.

Located very near Savignyplatz in Charlottenburg, this is one of the best Berlin-style bars (Kneipe) I have been to in the city. Tap list is pretty good for a locals place: includes Andechs, Schneider Weiss, and a host of standards. Food was decent. If you want an experience approximating the locals bar in Berlin and a decent tap selection of German beers, Dicke Wirtin is worth a stop.
