The owner of this place is an arsehole. He refused to serve my partner a soft drink as íit is a beer barí and refused either of us food as one of us wasnít drinking beer. He then went on to tell us all Americans & British were idiots with the exception of his mate Tim Webb. After a while he asked us to leave as we werenít both drinking beer and as we were leaving told us to fuck off and not come back. He wasnít eccentric, just unpleasant. The beer choice isnít that great either - there are far better options in Brugge. I have travelled widely in Belgium and this is the worst place I have visited. Avoid at all costs, and Tim Webb, if you are reading this, take it outof the Beer Guide. UPDATE: NOW CLOSED. Canít say Iím surprised considering his rather unconventional attitude to customers.

This is a restaurant that has beer, and not a bar that serves food, since the owners have reduced the beer list considerably and donít like to serve beer by itself. 4 taps still, but down to 53 bottles. Even so, it has an interesting list, well served, and the food is very nice. Off the beaten tourist track. Dickie the dachshund does NOT like to be photographed!!

I donít get this place. An American-style grillhouse on the western markt, it has a few outdoor tables which are nice for people watching and relaxing, but their entire food menu (entrees) is grilled, and after 3 or 4pm they do not allow you to order only appetizers... some of which looked good and we wanted to order but we could not without a full meal, and I do not want to waste a meal in Belgium on a grillhouse. Beer-wise the selection isnít terribly good. Some gueuze, some kriek, a few trappist, but no gems and nothing really to suggest you go out of your way to visit. I would suggest people use their time for better places.

We arrived in Brugge, a bit tired and footsore, and still a few hours from when we were supposed to check into our B&B, so still dragging luggage around with us. I stepped in to ask if they had room for us, and if it there might be place we could leave our luggage. They did, and they did. Traci and I both had a remarkably good steak, (better than the significantly more expensive one I had at Den Dryver), best Iíve had in ages. Friendly service, a warm, low-key atmosphere. Relatively small, but excellent beer menu. (They had Pannepot when I was there.) Finished our meal and then sat at the bar talking to the owner (?) for another hour. We ended up staying so long we had to call our B&B to say weíd be a bit late. Wish we could have made it back for another meal, and itís definitely one weíll return to on our next visit.

After hearing mixed reviews, I was very impressed by the selection, service and steaks. Pannepot was available when I was here, and I couldnít resist washing down a steak with it. The steaks were all cooked over an open flame and among the best weíve had in Belgium (where, compared to the USA, the meat quality is relatively low but the sauce quality very high). The server was happy to speak English--thatís normal in touristy Bruges--but besides that she was very attentive and we saw her often, even when we were out on the terrace. We ended up eating here twice in a day, and I look forward to our next visit...

Yogi_Beera sums it up beautifully. An unremarkable place in the Belgian context but hard to fault. The food was good, particularly the meat dishes, and the beer range morethan adequate. Plenty of beer tourists having a meal b/w bars, which seems to be Dickieís niche.

(Update 7/2007) The steaks were still excellent, and Dickie was fine, too :). They were out of roughly 1/3 of the beers because of troubles with some distributor. Luckily, they had listed those that were not available. Will visit again next time. (3/2007) Nice steaks (considering the Belgian so-so beef standards), nice sallad, nice selection of Alvinne brews (well, others, too), friendly dog (she really liked to be scratched from all over :). We were pretty much the only customers there at the time, and the owners (a couple?) had their own dinner at the same time as we did. Oh yeah, they were out of chicken. The toilet was "interesting", but it did its job. A must visit, at least during off-season.

It was great to try the Alvinne beers, I liked the three I had very much. The bartender or owner, or manager, Iím not sure which, was eager to discuss beer. He knew of Ratebeer, and knew the products he was selling. The man is a beer lover. Selection is small but very good. I didnít eat.

Very cozy and warm place. Awesome Steaks in Beersauce - delicious! Beer list is around 60-80 beers, some very well known as Drie Fonteinen Geuze and some other gems but also Beers from small breweries - like Alvinne. The owner and his wife drive to small breweries which have no distribution and buy their beer there. 80 percent of the people we saw at this place we saw later in Brugs Bertje - so it seems as a lot of Beer enthuasiasts go here. The service was great and caring.
