Nice old firehouse old concrete floors long bar and lots of seating area shame its in a crappy neighborhood, well up and coming neighborhood (slowly) .... The wood oven pizza was amazing had the bbq one and it was tasty .... the brews are always above average they had 5 on tap and a pint was 5 bucks .... the bartender Chris was prompt, friendly and knew his brews... definitely a place to visit and revisit
Former firehouse makes an odd BrewPub, especially when it is in the ghetto. Service was slow, inattentive, and oblivious about their beers. 7 or so house brews on tap. Pizza, fries, and burger were all good. In fact, the pizza was very good. Reasonable prices. Will not be running back since I can get their beers elsewhere.
This was my coup de coeur in Philadelphia. An out of the way brewpub that almost no one bothers going to. Itís actually not very complicated to reach. Take the metro to 52nd st. station and walk South for a mile or so. The walk is culturally valuable, but letís just say that if youíre a girl, I would not do it alone after sunset... Once you reach destination though, the whole neighborhood changes dramatically. Bus starts to exist again and the grey sky prepared a spectacular thunderstorm for us that started just as we arrived and finished just as we left. Good times. Once inside, the wood-fired pizza oven welcomes you home and this old building with high ceilings and school grilled gym windows with white walls, random tables and lefty, punk-like waiters are not only a sharp contrast with the neighborhood youíve just walked in, it also feels trashy and relaxing. We had some superb pizzas here. I must have tried pizza perhaps a hundred times in the United States and I believe this is the best one Iíve had save in Burlington and at Pizza Port. The crust was perfectly crunchy and just buttery enough. Thinking about it all, I feel a strong connexion between this place and Pizza Port. Same type of relaxed mood, great food and great beer. Talking about the beer, they had I believe 8 on tap including an excellent, very hoppy pilsner, a pretty solid peppery saison dupont clone and a convincing IPA. The 4 beers we tried were well above average. It may be a bit out of the way, but is certainly more accessible than Manayunk for instance and this one Iíd come back to anywhen.
Went here Monday right as they opened. The place itself is pretty cool, real laid back and simple. The service was friendly and helpful. The Tony Pepperoni was one of the better pizzeria style pizzas Ive had since moving to Philly, and the Brie was one of the best specialties. Its in a little bit shitty area, but it seems as though most of Philly is. The brews are stellar and I cant wait to go back and try more.
I am a huge fan of this place. Great ambiance, a bit rowdy for a wednesday night. Beer was solid, Pizza was out of this world. Be ready to throw down a nice bill, but it is definitely worth it. I plan to frequent this establishment on my trips to philly.
This place is pretty easy to get to but is in the middle of nowhere as far as Philly goes. Not a bad little place and the food was good. I got a burger and some pizza. The beer I had was solid but I wish they carried more of their beer. I understand they only have a couple taps but they could have more bottles. Overall a good visit.
I stopped in around 10:15 on a Tuesday night (they close at 11pm). Was it tattoo night? I swear that 80% of the people in their were tattooed and in the 20-30 age range, including the bartender. This place has sort of a small worn, european cafe vibe. Inside has a long bar, tables, and couches. Seating streetside is also available. I had 5 of the 6 beers on tap, all of which were good or better. They do have growlers to go as well. Food looked good, but I did not eat. Parking is not too bad, especially when compared to downtown. However, this borders a sketchy neighborhood and I would be careful parking too far off the beaten path at night. Even though I did not fit the look of everyone in the place, the bartender and patrons were very friendly. The bartender even served right up until close.I enjoyed brewpub and will return again, and possibly try the food.
I love this place. I love how it is un-centercityish. Located right next to the bike shop and coffee shop where I am sure many anarcho flyers and thoughts are swapped and put in practice. The food i.e. veggie burger and pizza are great. Had the portobello/gorgonzola pizza last time and I canít say enough good things about it. Also the Rye IPA will keep you coming back. I think Dock St. has the best beer of the brewerybars in Philly. I have been there on weekend nights and it can be hard to get a table. I have not experienced service that was incredibly lacking once seated though. The bartenders have always been cordial when at the bar. This is where you take your hipster, punk or ex-punker friends and the 34 will take you right in front and back to center city if you donít want to drive.
I was there with hopdog and his family...so see his comments below on the service. Bottom line is our server sucked! No other way to put it.
In terms of the beer. I thought it was all solid. The Rye IPA is great! Hands down the best IPA brewed in Philadelphia. Hopefully they keep it on as a regular, they should bottle it too. All the other beers on tap were solid 3.5ís or higher.
I had the burger and it was good. The Trio fries were really good too. I also had some of the pizza that we ordered for the kids and that was well done also. The atmosphere was lacking though, kind of run down looking on the inside.
