2 Very good things about this place. It is about 8 minutes from my house, and it has it’s own parking. Food tastes very good, but is rather limited. Large mostly local or near local beer selection. They have wine from the wood as well.

I want to like this place a lot and I really do already... But the Hophouse folks need to adjust a few things to really appeal to the hardcore beer geek crowd.

No. 1... Better glassware. Ironically their branding is based around beer glassware illustrations. But they use these ridiculously tall tumblers which i’m not even sure are 16oz based on what the menu says. They have tulips which are nice, but their snifters are too wide at the bottom which is more ideal for brandy.

No 2... Learn the beers better and better descriptions. Uinta was spelled Unita on the menu and their Black IPA Dubhe was spelled Doobie on the menu. Hopworks listed as " Hop Urban Works". They need to be more informed about their products. Also on their tap list board they don’t put the brewers names on a lot of the beers. For example they’ll just have "Espresso Stout." Is it Laurelwood’s or Oakshire’s espresso stout?

No. 3... Growler fills are an awesome amenity. But the prices are a bit too steep.

No. 5... Price structure makes no sense. $4.50 for a 12oz pour of Laurelwood’s awesome imperial stout, Moose & Squirrel. Wow! What a great deal. However North Coast’s Brother Thelonious was $8 for a 12oz. Not sure where they got that number from.

Here are my positives:

No. 1... Servers are friendly and very pleasant.

No. 2... Food is really good and on the lower side of the price scale. Plus a decent happy hour menu.

No. 3... Two blocks from my house which is ultra convenient.

No. 4... Had three Boneyard beers on tap at the same time.

No. 5... Big Oregon centric tap list offering a lot of seasonal and one off brews from around Portland, the state of Oregon, and the NW.

No. 6... Monday night there’s Trivia which is always fun. Team Midas Touch My Balls all the way!

Bottom line: It’s worth the visit, but you won’t get that Belmont Station or The BeerMongers -- ultra beery experience. If they can improve on the my few gripes above it will be an awesome joint. I’ve been going pretty regularly and don’t plan to stop.
