92 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 10/10 SELECTION 14/15 FOOD 9/10 VALUE 9/10 OVERALL 18/20 jmlynchaz (1) Arizona | May 21, 2013 Excellent bar with a great selection and friendly staff. Tap-turnovers once a month and other special events. | 76 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 11/15 FOOD 6/10 VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 16/20 Ibrew2or3 (301) Tempe, Arizona | April 5, 2013| Updated June 1, 2013 This is my second visit (as the 1st one was a failed attempt at enjoying the 4 Peaks Tap Take-over several months back, which sucked ASS!). So, the beer. Nice tap list of locals, new local stuff (I see two I didn’t even know about), some regionals and look there, the ’12 Abyss is on tap. Nice! They also offer up plenty of safe territory Hefes and Pales and lager and even a tap for Bud Light. To one side I see a small cooler full of beer. Good Gravy! There’s 5 different 50/50 Eclipse variants! Wonder what those cost. Cool nonetheless. I like the large bar area as well as some plush leather sofas to sit on. I guess they do taster/samples here but the menu is vague about what’s available. 3 have a price and the rest are undefined I guess. They do growler fills here too and I think only into 64oz containers. A good point is they serve ales at a pleasing temp and in room temperature glassware unlike 98% of the places I’ve been into. But they did serve up my IIPA in an aroma killing tumbler. It seems the wide squat tulips are for the “sipper” beers like Abyss. The pricing scheme seems odd here too. The New Belgium IIPA I’m drinking was $5.50 (pretty good deal) and a nearly hop free San Tan core Amber offering is $5 (not such a great deal). The 12oz pour of Abyss is $8 and that seems very reasonable. So this place has some +’s and some –‘s but I do think it is worth it for me to try and drop in here at least once every week or two. I found the staff friendly. Good place to check out for a beer. Go here. | 68 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 11/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 6/10 OVERALL 13/20 hellbilly (139) scottsdale über alles, Arizona | July 30, 2012| Updated June 1, 2013 feels more like a run of the mill bar than a beer bar which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. it has no ambiance or character....if it were in las vegas it would have video poker built into the bar. tap lists are great but usually aren’t when i decide to show up....so, they’re either all or nothing. service is hit or miss as are the hours....something feels wrong about being given last call at 930 on a sunday night while you are drinking and willing to spend money....meh is my rating | 52 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 4/10 SELECTION 8/15 FOOD 5/10 VALUE 3/10 OVERALL 11/20 radarsock (37) Massachusetts | June 2, 2012| Updated June 1, 2013 This pace is what makes me believe some obnoxious sports bars are now trying to cash in on the "craft beer" spectacle for profit , slightly shift their gears and cater not only to the drunken frat boys, but to the sickly amused yuppies that seem to think this is fine dining.
NEGATIVES:
-It seems every time I’ve been, their bar tops are sticky and not what I would consider "well cleaned", from a previous customer.
-They actually charge (and a lot!) for plain-old carbonated water.
--It’s ridiculous how much a simple porter will cost you just for them to pour it in to a pint glass.
-Not necessarily a flaw, but I personally found their playlist music to be rather irritating (radio-friendly alternative rock, anybody?)
-The taxation is ridiculous.
-Food here is just above mediocre and yet you should fully expect pay out the ass.
POSITIVES:
-They in fact do have a big selection of beer.
-Service has varied for me over the years, but when it’s on, it’s really on.
-Flanny’s has an easy location (near the Tempe Cinemas!).
That’s all I could think of; it is possible that there are the same amount of Positives as there are Negatives, but I’ll make this simple: Not going back. Thanks, but no thanks. | 88 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 18/20 JPDurden24 (110) Chandler, Arizona | April 8, 2012| Updated June 1, 2013 Another great bar in the area with friendly owners and a superb craft beer selection. Rotating taps, excellent events, and always a fun time. Good food, and live music on certain days as well. | 84 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 10/10 SELECTION 12/15 FOOD 6/10 VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 17/20 Swillbur (24) Arizona | January 25, 2012| Updated June 1, 2013 This place is more of a neighborhood bar then a craft place. Everytime i go in its mostly people drinking mixed drinks or BMC. That being said they always have a good amount of rotating craft taps and the service is top notch! | 92 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 10/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE 9/10 OVERALL 18/20 daknole (300) Scottsdale, Arizona | December 9, 2011| Updated June 1, 2013 Really a great place. Family run and its refreshing to find owners who are so appreaciative of their customers. A superb place in all aspects...one that I will be visiting a lot more. | 92 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 14/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE 9/10 OVERALL 20/20 hopderivative (4) Scottsdale, Arizona | February 15, 2011| Updated June 1, 2013 Had Lucky Bastard and Deschutes Abyss on tap and sampled two other porters. Missed the Bell’s Hop Slam from two weeks previous. Great selection of beers on tap (and bottles too) which rotate out frequently. Only complaint. . . . I don’t live in the immediate surrounding area! IF I did I would be a regular. |
