100 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 10/10 SELECTION 15/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE 10/10 OVERALL 20/20 wrx72 (10) Kent, Ohio | October 23, 2011 I have always had good experiences when visiting Founder’s brewing. The tap selection is usually excellent and I especially like the beer hall type atmosphere they project. The food is good at Founder’s considering that it is basically a carry-out window next to the bar. I would not travel to Grand Rapids without at least stopping off a Founder’s for a pint or two. | 100 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 10/10 SELECTION 15/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE 10/10 OVERALL 20/20 Porterback (5) | November 19, 2010 Far and away the best place to drink beer in Michigan. The beer is top notch, the food is outstanding, and the overall atmosphere is unmatched. As a GR native we are lucky to have a place like this in our backyard. | 100 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 10/10 SELECTION 15/15 FOOD 6/10 VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 20/20 jeffmw (14) | July 17, 2009 Perhaps this was because we got the "special treatment" but I can’t imagine a brewery experience that would be better. We arranged ahead of time on our beer tour and Founder Dave Engbers gave us a personal tour of the brewery and then sat with us for a good hour or so after with us, drinking and talking the buisness. It was very generous of him and very, very cool. The beer was spectacular. Everything we had was even better on tap than it has been in the bottle when I’ve had it before. Unfortunately they had run out of the Canadian Breakfast a few days before, but the Kentucky Breakfast was superb. The Maple Brown was one of the best beers I’ve ever had - no joke. It was definitely the highlight of our 3-day trip. | 98 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 10/10 SELECTION 15/15 FOOD 10/10 VALUE 9/10 OVERALL 19/20 timc100 (5) Park Ridge, Illinois | January 31, 2013 Big tables bench-stlye, amazing deli meat sandwiches, and (at the time) all the backwoods bastard you could dream of. Great day, great experience. Looking forward to returning. | 98 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 10/10 SELECTION 15/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE 10/10 OVERALL 19/20 freehafe (3) Jenison, Michigan | March 8, 2012 Live in the area, and have been going to Founders for years. Very chill ambiance, open area with lots of seating and tables. Service is good, always very helpful and knowledgeable, food is solid, and the beer is excellent. Always a large selection, tap list changes frequently (but is available online), and the prices are reasonable. Place can be very busy at sometimes, but it is well worth the trip. | 98 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 10/10 SELECTION 15/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 19/20 beerslut1977 (1) | December 4, 2009 Their beer is epic. No exaggeration. Awesome selection and just excellent beer from the double trouble IPA to Breakfast stout. Try them all you will not be disappointed. The bar staff is very knowledgeable their beers very well. Great sandwiches and bar food too. Just an all around excellent place to hang out. | 98 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 15/15 FOOD 9/10 VALUE 9/10 OVERALL 20/20 bigtaster (42) Grand Rapids, Michigan | April 23, 2008| Updated January 29, 2013 Nice chill atmosphere with focus on good beer. The staff is relaxed and helpful. Did not have any food but I love all their beer. Good prices for the quality, great brewery. | 96 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 15/15 FOOD 9/10 VALUE 9/10 OVERALL 19/20 foundmd (26) Cincinnati, Ohio | June 8, 2009| Updated January 29, 2013 Visited for dinner on 06/06/09. The second stop of three during a trip to some of the Midwest’s most essential breweries. Located in downtown Grand Rapids, Founders might be my favorite brewery at the moment. The taplist was incredible. I sipped on Canadian Breakfast Stout, Barrel Aged Imperial Stout, KBS, and Barrel Aged Red’s Rye. They were all amazing. My wife enjoyed her Oatmeal Stout and loved the Cerise. The food was good (some beer cheese dip and a veggie sandwich), and the atmosphere was comfortable. The bar is huge, and there’s plenty of seating both indoors and outside. There was steady stream of locals stopping in to get their growlers filled. Take out bottles are refrigerated and decently priced. There’s also live music nearly every night of the week. Founders is a phenomenal brewery, and their taproom accentuates their craftsmanship. Grand Rapids was a great city to stay the night, and since it’s only 45 minutes north of Kalamazoo (Bell’s) it’s an ideal weekend getaway for beer enthusiasts. Simply put, Founders is a must. | 96 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 15/15 FOOD 10/10 VALUE 10/10 OVERALL 19/20 BeNobleDark (7) Allendale, Michigan | October 21, 2010| Updated January 29, 2013 This is one of the most beautiful taprooms in west michigan! The service is excellent, servers on the floor, the porch, as well as behind the bar. Some people complain about the service when it’s super packed - but what do you expect? None of us are superheroes.
the selection is WONDERFUL. They keep a constantly rotating selection available. The standards, specialties, and rarities. New beers go on pretty constantly, giving the people at the taproom a chance to taste beers that will never make it into the bottle.
the food is AMAZING. All they have is a simple sandwich kitchen, but you can’t find a better sandwich in West Michigan.
Prices are great! Cheapest place to drink in the city (even at full price)!
I swear by founders. Beer lovers, beware. You can never have just one, and before you know it, the floor’s a little wobbly. | 96 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 15/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE 9/10 OVERALL 19/20 Spartan213 (5) Macomb, Michigan | April 19, 2012| Updated January 29, 2013 What’s not to love. We have been quite a few times and there is always something fantastic on tap to try. First trip, Cashew Mountain Brown, next time was Better Half then Backwoods Bastard. The food was great as well and every time we have been the service has been fantastic. Can’t wait to go back. |
