Excellent atmosphere, beer, service and food. Just the right amount of everything, and the kind of place where everyone feels welcome. A must visit if you’re anywhere near Lawrence. This place is perfection for me! | 96 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 15/15 FOOD 10/10 VALUE N/A OVERALL 19/20 PhillyBeer2112 (64) Oviedo, Florida | November 2, 2004| Updated July 30, 2008 Easily....EASILY one of the best brewpubs int he US. The food is amazing, outstanding, some of the best. Of course the beers are well worth it regardless. | 96 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 10/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD 10/10 VALUE N/A OVERALL 20/20 csbosox (13) Prairie Village, Kansas | January 5, 2005| Updated June 29, 2008 This is a beautiful building in the heart of downtown Lawrence, right by the historic Liberty Hall. The building is vintage and wonderfully decorated. Most of the staff has been there forever and the new staff is usually really good. The food is great. Above average bar food to wonderful specials. They use many seasonal and local products and it shows in their wonderful food. Smoking, like all of Lawrence now, is not allowed inside, which is nice when you are eating and enjoying beer. Now lets get to the beer. Wonderful. They have many great beers on tap and they rotate the new beers in pretty often. They brew beer styles that you don’t often see at most brewpubs. Their 2 big beers, available all winter, are amazing, they are the Owd Macs Imp Stout and the Old Backus Barleywine, both are world class. I lived at this place when I lived in Lawrence and go there almost everytime I head to Lawrence. Monday night is $1.75 beer night, when the have 4 beers on tap for that price. I would say that Free State is essential for any beer and/or food lover. The only knock I have on the place is that nearly every beer is served too cold. | 96 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 10/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE 10/10 OVERALL 20/20 freqflyerord (1) Illinois | July 14, 2010| Updated June 29, 2008 By far the best oatmeal stout i have ever had. This place is the best kept secret in Kansas. | 94 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 15/15 FOOD 9/10 VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 18/20 eclaycamp (35) , Kansas | June 19, 2010| Updated June 29, 2008 Far and away the best brewpub in north east Kansas. Free State’s signature beers are all amazing, but they always have just as many, if not more, seasonal and special beers on tap. I’ve been a number of times and I’ve never had the same thing to drink. Their food is also very good though a tad overpriced. The only negative experience I’ve had was my onion rings - which came out slightly greasy. However, this is hands down the best brewpub that you can find in the area - try to find the C3 IPA if you can, it’s worth it. Highly recommended. | 94 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 10/10 SELECTION 14/15 FOOD N/A VALUE N/A OVERALL 19/20 theisti (352) Leawood, Kansas | May 29, 2007| Updated June 28, 2012 Visited for lunch in May 2007. I had the Owd Macs (the reason I had driven to Lawrence), the fruit and cheese plate, and the Soup of the Day (pork posole). Everything was great, and the service was top notch. Overall, this place is pretty ordinary inside, but the food and brews make it a most stop if you are anywhere near Lawrence, Kansas. One big drawback is they serve regular lineup WAY too cold. In the evenings this place tends to get crowded and really loud. This becomes a problem throughout the space, because bar, tables and upstairs are not separated particularly well. | 92 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 10/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD 9/10 VALUE N/A OVERALL 19/20 Gregis (24) Shawnee, Kansas | July 15, 2007| Updated June 28, 2012 Having lived in Lawrence for five years, I can’t begin to remember how many times I’ve been to Free State, but two things have always remained constant: good beer and I’ve never left disappointed with the food or the service. Not many places can say that. If you want a lively pub atmosphere with 6+ handmade beers on tap/cask, ask to be seated downstairs near the bar (no smoking) or upstairs overlooking the street and the bar. If you want a more subdued atmosphere where you can sample the beer and food in quieter surroundings, ask to be seated in the back rooms. | 92 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 10/10 SELECTION 12/15 FOOD 9/10 VALUE N/A OVERALL 19/20 eboats (32) Omaha, Nebraska | March 20, 2007| Updated June 28, 2012 Has a great location downtown close to campus. Two levels with an outdoor seating as well. The upper level has a nice view out of a huge window onto the down town street. The beer was solid all around with a few stand outs. The service was unbelievable. I was even given 5 different types of mustard to use. Probably the friendliest and best service I have seen anywhere I have ever been. Just outstanding. I ordered the Rueben and it was delicious. The rest of the menu looked very good as well. A MUST stop. | 92 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 14/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 10/10 OVERALL 18/20 miguelmayo (11) Colorado Springs, Colorado | April 3, 2012| Updated June 28, 2012 I was on my way to a concert next door and was surprised to find a top notch brew pub right there, from out of state I enjoyed myself on the patio, the beer was very good the service was great for as busy as it was on a weeknight! Popular place for sure! Well worth a visit, good beer and good service = a favorite | 90 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 10/10 SELECTION 12/15 FOOD 10/10 VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 19/20 KUEric (111) Washington, Washington DC | May 7, 2005| Updated January 23, 2011 Fantastic! Utterly Lawrence. A must visit if in town, great quality food, have a laid back atmosphere while serving an eclectic mix in their foods. The artichoke dip is amazing, definitely get that.
Really I’ve enjoyed every beer I’ve sampled there, yet to have a bad beer. They will have I believe 8 on tap at all times...but their selection of what they brew is very extensive with new and unique brews coming out several times a year, plus a list of nearly 100 they have brewed over time; making it the perfect place to visit again and again. |
