Can’t miss this joint; right by the cathedral. Visited three times, "97. ’02, 07). Selection is limited to the tasty, soft Kolsch. Food was solid; I remember eating wild boar in game season. A classic beer hall.

Great brewpub with lots of tucked-away rooms to enjoy many a glass of kölsch. Food was great, and service was good, even though the place was packed. Köbes ran here and there, refilling glasses faster than (anybody else) could drink :).

We visited Früh am Dom on our way back to our hotel. This is another huge sprawling place but with acres of wood and original historocal features throughout, despite the wonderful weather (it was wall to wall sunshine) we sat inside just to get a feel for this place, and sat by a huge wonderfully tiled fireplace. This place is close to both the station and the cathedral both of which you cannot miss, so you shouldn’t muss this either. The beer ’Kolsch’ is from Früh, service good if a little less friendly, and overall you got the feeling that this really was a less personal experience and that the place was ticking over on autopilot. Fine but much better to be found around these parts.

Large touristy traditional Kolsch bar with beer garden on square opposite cathedral. Fast but unfriendly service. Only 1 beer available. Not a great place.

Whilst in a very touristy location this is still quite a nice Kölsch bar. Service was extremely attentive and after giving the impression that we may not have actually been tourists but locals it became even better and from our calculations we paid the locals’ Kölsch price and not the inflated tourists’ price.
The Kölsch is nice and the decor is too however if you want to escape tourists I would look elsewhere.

Visited twice, once in summer 2009 with family and again in September 2012 with chinoskillzian and womencantsail.
This is right across the way from the cathedral (hence the name am Dom). It’s a very popular place but it’s also very nice. As mentioned the building is in a great spot, where you can get a view of the cathedral as you drink a beer and if you want, talk with the other patrons as you’ll undoubtedly be sharing a table with people that you don’t know. Both visits saw nice weather but on the first I had good service where as on the second one the service was bad. That’s what you get for paying your servers better by rolling the tip into the bill. If you’re young and not dressed in expensive clothes they’ll treat you like crap. Also, kolsch prices are higher than alt prices despite being served in a smaller glass. Even if you get a crappy server go check out the inside of the building, it’s neat.

This place was so very very very busy. Beer was okay but had to beg to get one. Folks were not that interested in seeing you happy, the crowd was just overwhelming... not a bad kosch though.

Lovely beer (one of the best if not the most famous of the all the Kolsch beers) in a lovely bulding offset by hordes of naive tourists and irate, rude bar staff... Shame it’s so centrally located or it would be a hidden treasure! Prices as you can imagine are sky high.

Visited on Friday 26/04/13 around 4.45 pm.
A stones throw from Gaffel Am Dom and the Hbf so ideal if you have a 30 minute change of trains for a quick beer fix.
This bar is set across 3 floors, ground, upper and cellar and also has outside patio seating which was full of smokers, the inside was relatively quiet in comparison.
Tiled floor with wooden tables and chairs, fairly trad interior, stone walls adorned with a few nic-nacs.
The service was prompt and the waiter friendly and spoke good English.
A few people were eating and the food looked good. Seemed to be a mix of tourists (it’s right by the cathedral) and local workers.
Just the one beer in the form of their own kolsch.

Klassischer Kölner Biertempel, Treffpunkt von Alt und Jung.
Lots of tourists, because its close to the cathedral - but no tourist trap. Food is good. Prices are downtown prices. Lots of thing to see inside.

Total tourist trap right by the cathedral and museums. A bit more expensive than the other places in town and probably the worst of the beers. Worth it for a quick beer/tick, but not someplace I’d hang out at for very long.
