Cold and wet Wednesday early evening (11 Sep 2013): no room downstairs, so was ushered to the first floor which was completely empty and we felt ostracized from everyone else. Luckily others were also shown the upstairs and people began to join us. We had a great table (plenty of choice when you’re the first in) with a view over the square to the Minster. We could watch passers by getting wet and blown about!
Nice place by the way: service was fine, the food good, but on the expensive side I had the Grilled meat plate (Fleishgillteller) and the wife a Grilled fish plate (Fischgrillteller), both beautifully presented and wolfed down by the two of us. The Pils and Wodan (their Doppelbock), both on tap were very good and we enjoyed our little stay in the place, pity about the weather.

Came here late May 2013, first time since 2002! Still a good choice of beer styles and good food and service in a lovely olde worlde pub by the beautiful cathedral. Still gets my vote in this town. On this visit I enjoyed their pils, maibock and a strong and dark Wodan.

Visited for dinner on a Saturday evening in July ’11.
We were seated upstairs and the place was fair packed.
Wooden pannelled trad kind of a place.
Service was good, selection not bad - I had the Urtrunk and the Weizen Hell and Dunkel.
Food was a let down - the waitress seemed to take great pride and suggest that it was the best ’Haxe in the whole of Germany - it was probably the worst I’d ever had - crap portion of pork, too dry, and bugger all side of tatties and kraut.
Nice enough place, the beer was good and so was the atmosphere.

Right on Münsterplatz (not the picture above, mind you), so you can’t miss it when visiting Freiburg. Food is pretty decent here, and the terrace looks right onto the cathedral. Inside is your typical comfortable brown bar. There’s a second floor too that looked welcoming. The main reason a beer geek would visit though is that they carry a couple of taps on tap that the brewery itself usually doesn’t have: the Urtrunk, a wonderful unfiltered lager, and the Wodan, their Doppelbock. It’s rather nice to have a Doppelbock available year round, but the Urtrunk deserves as much attention.
