Visited on a wednesday for lunch. It wasn’t overly crowded, but it was almost full. Really nice ambiance with almost only locals. Service was efficient and quite friendly. Selection is limited to one beer, but since it’s the best Kölsch (Päffgen) it’s still a pretty good selection. The beer is served properly too. The food was really good. The Kotelett was huge and super tasty too. Price are great for the beer and for the food. For what is it, it’s hard to get any better than this. Great ambiance, great food and great price along the best Kölsch you can get in Cologne!

OK, the beer isn’t the main attraction, although it is certainly not bad. Reeking of atmosphere and with a worn down charm, a welcome alternative to the generic Koln outlets.

Visited during Festival der Bierkulturen 2014. A Kölner classic, revived and now comfortably at ease with being a revived run-down stereotype of solid Cologne, no-nonsense Brauhaus tradition. Blue-collar atmosphere, to the point of turning cigar brown as the walls, but with refurbished WCs. To reiterate and confirm: the chunky, crispy, juicy Kotelett and mandingo Bratwurst are the main draw here, the singular Päffgen on cask this side of the Rhine and the attentive, no-nonsense yet never rude service the true lustre of this place. Owned by Päffgen I’m told. One of those places you are glad is on RB when planning a trip using only this site, although it maybe technically shouldn’t be...

This bar was about twenty minutes walk maybe a bit less if we hadn’t of dawdled taking in views when crossing the river. This place looks a very non-descript place from the outside, btw its close to Deutzer Freheit a Ubahn station, actually wasn’t Freheit a band from the eighties who were ’keeping the dream alive’. The room upstairs actually ground floor was rammed so we headed downstairs to the cellar which was ranked also rammed. We sat and waited patiently for a table to become free, probably an hour and 20 mins drinking Kolsch :-) We were then offered a table to join two German ladies who were just finishing their meals, they were really lovely very friendly & also helpful explaining the menu, they worked at Cologne/Bonn airport for Lufthansa but because of the local travel strikes across the city yesterday & today they were having a couple of beers (they had six each!) before driving home. Back to the place. The food portions were typically German i.e. a shrine to pork, they were also huge, tasty, simple & great value. The Paffgen Kolsch was excellent, prices were superb for food & beer. This place is deservedly popular, really like it, great buzz about this real friendly place.

Managed to get a table on a Friday night and it was again close to perfect. Frank runs this places flawless. Päffgen is served perfectly, food (Kotelett, Bratwurst) is very good by Brauhaus standards. I left at 4:00 am after we finished the last keg with the help of some Dunnerkiel. Only drawback: always crowded and no reservation. Cellar rooms are only second choice.

Very relaxed beergarden with great service and simple but good-quality meals. They have only one beer - Kolsch - but its served quickly and fresh, and its excellent.
Authentic Cologne beer experience.

This place is an homage to one man, whose portrait hangs throughout the bar. The place, as others have noted, is a bit past its prime. That doesn’t stop it from being a pilgrimage destination, as well as a regular haunt for neighborhood residents and workers. The food is now the main attraction. Portions are large even by German standards - come hungry.

Hit this place on a super sunny afternoon. Sat outside and had some beer and food. Service was probably some of the best in Germany that we had. Limited selection as you can expect but the Paffgen was fantastic. Food was really good, as were the prices. Across the river but worth the trek, even if on foot.
