Well itís ancient and cramped in spots, but itís got that old pub charm. Bars on two floors and more tables on the top floor. When itís busy food preparation may be a bit slow, but service was always friendly and excellent. Not a major ale destination, but I found 2 new to me ales, and the food is tasty. Some items are even innovative.

An atmospheric but oddly not very comfortable pub with five hand pumps and around six rather commonplace keg beers. When we visited the Golden Fleece on a Sunday evening in February it was very, very dark. There were just a few dim lamps and flickering flames to light the way to our seats - church pews. Thereís wood panelling and yellow ochre walls with some framed prints and sketches, possibly of old York although it was so dark it was difficult to see. We hadnít been there long when a tour guide, funereally dressed in a top hat, came in to gather people together for a ghost tour. Perhaps that explains the lack of lighting. The beer was fine but nothing to get excited about and the run-of-the-mill keg beers have equal pegging with the cask ales. (Visited 26 February 2012).

Quite nice for an afternoon beer but didnít seem poured right, might have been too cold for my liking. A little pricey too but as a city pub I guess itís to be expected. Hate to say it but the staff lacked slightly in their customer service, but it was quite busy when I was there so I understand she may have been a bit rushed off her feet.

Iím pretty much with Jehoey on this one. Popped in because it had an advert in Ouse Boozer, the local CAMRA newsletter, and is right in front of you as you emerge from the Shambles, which any self respecting tourist is bound to do at some point during a visit to York. 5 casks and 7 macro kegs on my visit. Nothing to get too excited about - Landlord, Black Sheep Bitter, Ruddles County, Old Speckled Hen & York Yorkshire Terrier. Not too busy when we visited late afternoon although we got the last seats in the front bar - the large back room had a reserved for diners sign. Obviously an old building and makes a lot of its most haunted status - one of the dozens of York ghost walks starts from here - but the interior comes over as a bit nondescript. We got served immediately but the barmaid then disappeared for about ten minutes, leaving the bar unattended. The Blue Bell, just round the corner in Fossgate is a much more interesting place.

Nothing special here. Only 3 hand pumps and then macro shitte on tap. However I did have a tim taylor landlord and an old speckled hen which was just retired. Cask beers were served way too cold. There were nice places to sit though and it was quite enough wherever some intoxicated people left that you could have a nice conversation. The pub is visually pleasing inside but doesnít have much to offer. Iíve heard that the ghost memoriblia on the walls is fun to take a look at though. There are much better pubs in York
