Sort of a dive. Irish pub themed place, a bit dark on the inside. A few local products from the likes of Santa Cruz Mountain. Maybe a cider, some English beer, Guinness, Murphy’s, etc. Though a handful of micros was a bit surprising. I guess maybe the place to go to get loaded on St. Patty’s day.

Ugh, another Irish bar. Nothing against the Irish or the concept of an "Irish bar" (dark, everything wood, and the usual "imports") but why do people insist on adding them to the database? This was a 5 minute kind of stop. There was a band playing when I walked in but the tap list wasnt very inspiring. In the same shopping center as a record store (something I’ll check out next time) and a bakery.

The poet is a nice little pub just off of the main drag in downtown Santa Cruz. Cozy is definitely the word here, and board games and darts are the preferred forms of entertainment for patrons. The beer selection is alright but definitely not geeky by any means. There are a few solid Belgian bottled beers and some unibruou stuff. You’ll probably find a couple local crafts on tap along with some bigger regional stuff. I’ve never seen anything spectacular, but you can count on a good pint, even if it’s nothing hard to find in general. Oh, and they do guinness chilled and at room temp for those who are into that sort of thing. Overall, I’d check it out for the nice atmosphere and decent selection, but this isn’t really a beer hunter destination if you are visiting town.

The Poet is a pretty divey Irish-esque pub that serves Guinness, Murphy’s, Red Hook, PBR, Smithwick’s, and a couple other crummy beers. Very little selection, hardly any turnover. No reason to go here unless you really like playing darts.

Opened 1982. Room-temperature Guinness on tap, decent pours. Murphy’s, Smithwick’s, Magners cider. Not a remarkable selection otherwise; a few macros, a few regional craft brews, a few very local craft brews. Relaxed weekday atmosphere; a solid neighborhood pub. Separate dart room. Darts tournaments throughout the week. A comfortable place to shoot the bull after work.
