Greenbush Bar is located in the basement of the Italian Workmen’s Club in the traditionally Italian neighborhood of Madison called Greenbush. The area has gentrified and changed a lot, but the organization has occupied the top floor of this building since 1922 and the Greenbush Bar has been open under the current ownership since the early 1990s. The atmosphere is warm and cozy; the space is not large and has a curving bar on the right with about 20+ tables in all. Christmas lights line the ceiling year-round to add to the dim lighting. The food is great- pizza (best in Madison), outstanding Italian food, and good selection of local brews. There are 8 taps, all local/close regional (Lake Louie, New Glarus, Milwaukee, Ale Asylum, Central Waters, et al). Maybe 20-30 bottles include some more regionals- more Central Waters, B. Nektar, etc. They work hard to buy locally for almost all food ingredients and most of the beer. You’ll even find Pappy Van Winkle bourbons, which merit mentioning in the current beer geek landscape. The service is excellent. I come here every time I visit Madison and find something new to like each time.
