kind of a dingy hole in the wall type place, but the beer list has always been way above solid. canít speak for the food, but just for beer and knowledgeable service? Yes..

Amazing draft selection. Also bottle selection was interesting and had a chance try couple of ones from Russian River. Also Boneyard Notorious on tap was one of the best beers in the world. So overall excellent place.

Great draft selection and atmosphere inside. It was especially fun when we visited because the World Cup was playing, so it was a packed house. Small to medium size selection of bottles, but they are all quality. The nice ones can be very pricey ($75 bottles of Cantillon), but I could see 3-4 guys going in on some things just to try. Found bottles here that were long gone everywhere else. Service can be shotty, but its a must-stop when visiting Portland.

Probably my favorite pure beer bar by far. Plenty of outdoor seating, as well as inside seating if the weather is crap. The draft list is always updating and always awesome. Plenty of bottles to buy as well, even though some are pretty outrageously priced. But, if you want to try something that is long gone around town or was a limited release form a year or two ago, they may have it. I have always had great service here. As mentioned it is cash only and you can bring food in. A must when in Portland.

Only came here once, so trying not to gush but I loved this place! Wish we could have revisited. I loved they had Adambier on the same taplist as swill I would never drink. Actually the selection was pretty deep with a great variety of styles and although not all local, there were lots of Oregonian brews. Loved the unpretentious lively atmosphere, the huge patio. Loved the self-serve model. Had to bat my eyelashes just to get a wee taste before buying something (normally they want you to buy a taster) but otherwise the service was pretty good considering how busy it was.

I somehow havenít rated Apex, yet, so I need to rectify this error.
1st: They have done their best to take on the vibe of the Toronado in SF (though it seems more like the SD location to me.) Personally, I love it. Iíve never had a bad visit at either, location, and in fact, most of my visits have been good.
So the service for me gets a little higher score. Bartenders tend to be fast if you know what you want, and if theyíre not busy, Iíve had several good chats at a dead bar.
Selection is superlative, and you only need to check the taplist to see this for yourself.
Prices are fair for the area, sometimes low, sometimes high. It evens out.
No food, but you can either bring in your own, (such as the great Double Dragon across the street) or get something from the Mexican place next door. They have a little walkway they can use to call out your name.
Itís really a great place and worth visiting if youíre in the area. Top beer bar in Portland. (Not counting bottle shop/bars such as Beermongers or Belmont Station).

APEX may be a bit loud if youíre there during peak hours, both from young people shouting over tables and from the loud music on the speakers. Except for that, which is a minus in my unpublished Book of Good Beer Places, APEX gets top score for its efficient service, excellent bottle beer menu (including most Belgian lambics) and the amazing draught beer menu which listed among other things Pliny the Elder, Djśvlebrygg Nekron, North Coast Old Rasputin, Petrus Aged Pale, La Fin du Monde and many many more. Surely, this must be the ultimate beer bar in Portland? Visited: 2014-07-21

Damn this place was awesome, easily my favourite spot in Portland. 50 taps full of awesome beers from all around the world, including some rare ones. Really cheap prices, and 6oz tasters available as well.
The bottle list is insane too. Sure, they are a bit more expensive than in other places, but they had some really special beers available and loads of limited releases that were sold out in other places a long time ago. And they sell them to go! So be prepared with a lot of cash when visiting this place (as cards are not accepted)...

Huge tap selection on a digital board, 250 bottles and a pinball arcade, what isnít too like? Another annoying cash only spot, but the server was accommodating to my ticking by giving me half pours so I could tick several Boneyard and Crux beers, honestly too many for me to even get to. The bottles are on the rarer side but they will cost you a pretty penny. Didnít really get the feel inside, outside had a better vibe. Loved this spot and depending what mood Iím in would be here or Horse Brass all day.
