(Store) the walk in beer cave is apparently gone, replaced by conventional arrangement of refrigerators. Very good selection of mostly local and regional beers, decent choice of out of state (CA, MI, CO, OR and others), sprinkling of Belgian, German, and British bottles. Beer prices are average. Have not tried the bar area yet.
Rerate Visited here again after a 10 year break. The Beer Cave has really picked up, hundreds of singles to choose from and they have added a bar with about 8 or so taps and plenty of lively conversation. Great to revisit again. Original 74 Visited again While working in Austin for a few months, this is my weekly visit to stock up for the week. They have a good selection of locals, a few western micros and a great selection of Belgians- rough guess about 50 different ones in the cooler. Donít just look in the cooler, turn around, over by the wine is a shelf with about 20 Belgians, mostly in 750 ml bottles. Also have sakeí, meads and ciders. The take out food is pretty good in the deli and the service is quick and friendly and very "earthy".
This is the original Whole Foods and it is massive. They have a bar inside so you can drink some brews and shop. I love the Whole Foods with that feature. The beer is almost exclusively kept in a walk in cooler, which is another big plus. I only went to one other bottle shop in Austin, so Iím not sure how the selection measures up to the rest of the city. But it had more than adequate selection of local, regional and import stuff. Prices are great, but I think thatís just Texas in general. This is right downtown, so thatís another bonus.
Flagship Whole Foods store in Austin. Huge place, kind of tough to navigate the parking lot. Staff was friendly but didnít know much. Solid selection but most of it is in a cooler, which I didnít need because I was traveling with it. Prices for beer were fair but everything else is overpriced. I guess itís worth a stop for bottles but Iíd rather go to Whip In if possible.
This is a pretty good spot, and itís nice that they have a walk in cooler in the middle of the room. The selection is ok, mostly 6 packs, handful of bombers. I donít know, there are a lot better whole foods than this one, and I donít want to drink a pint sitting in the middle of a grocery store. I donít get the feeling there is anything better downtown though.
The Flagship Whole Foods location which features a huge store and parking garage so finding a place to park is not difficult, which is nice since there is very little parking in Downtown Austin. A great selection of beers, as with most Whole Foods. Also has a bar with a nice tap selection.
We visited the place where it all started (or at least the current location near where it all started) today. This place has a nice bar (only 6 beers on tap when I visited, not the 8 listed in the description), and a really nice selection of bottles in the walk-in fridge area. It was a pretty cool set-up, and we enjoyed a beer from the tap while we perused the selection in the fridge. If I lived near by Iíd definitely be back here for the some combination shopping and drinking.
The Lamar WFM store, and the new "Bar Lamar" are amazing values. The Bar is an incredible place to have happy hour, as you can go into the substantial beer cooler, bring it over to the bar and pay grocery store prices for bar drinking.
The selection in the beer cooler is substantial, probably as large as any place in Austin. Their biggest constraint is distribution in TX, moreso than space or will.
Check out the huge selection of singles and bombers.

Was quite impressed for a grocery store to have a beer cooler with sliding doors and have a pretty darn good selection in both bombers and a lot in singles. Not being able to compare to other places in Austin as I was there on business I was able to pick up some stuff not available in my area. Always had decent service but as previously mentioned the food prices are a bit steep.
