26 AMBIANCE 2/5 SERVICE 3/10 SELECTION 2/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 6/20
Review based primarily on Wycombe & Reading stores. Budget supermarket offering a "budget" retail experience with "budget" service and "budget" beers. The Reading store was filthy; the High Wycombe store is newer and thus at least looks cleaner. In both cases the stock was just dumped on or near the shelves making the place look messy. There’s nowhere near enough staff meaning that you always have to queue. There’s a few of the standard pasteurised bitters from the big regionals, and a few of their own brand contract-brewed bitters. You’ll definitely get some ticks (from their own brand stuff at least) but they’re unlikely to provide you with any great pleasure. Prices are low (although the 3 for £5 offers at the main supermarkets are often cheaper) but possibly not low enough to justify a truly dismal retail experience. One to avoid beerwise, although having said that the bread and meat are actually surprisingly decent quality and certainly good value.

Visited the Lidl in Hawkinge and in Eastbourne. The selection is ok, some own brands, some mainstream brands. Sometimes you might find special beers on offer, like when there is a special theme week. Worth a visit.

I used to use Lidl on occasions when we lived in Germany and I pop into our local one in the UK every so often just to see what’s about (beer and food wise).
Usually disappointed with the beer selection actually, own brands and Shepherd Neame stuff seems to be the norm.
Cheap enough and the chance of a new tick once in a while, but not the sort of supermarket chain that’s going to sell any ’world beaters’.

Similar to Aldi in that they have plenty of contract brews for their own brand ales, beers and ciders, but not quite as many. You can find some brand brews too. Shepherd Neame supply them with specials and seasonal bottles throughout the year.

When we called into the store in Blackbird Hill, Wembley (NW9 8SD) we found a few new beers amongst the 20 or so bottles and cans - nothing exciting (or, I suspect, top quality) but we have to keep the tickers happy. As with just about everything else here, the prices were low.
