I went in this bar with my family. The beers are perfect and changing from the boring products of the macrobrewery. The service is nice, the only negative comment is that the staff donít speak english and they were not knowing all the beers available, even though my notation is good. The prices for the food are not cheap but the quality is ok. I strongly recommend to try the imperial stout.
Pleasant relaxed bar, with focus on own beers. Mix of bar and lounge seating. Big bar with prominent taps. Mixed crowd, not obviously beer aficionados. Six own beers on tap with maybe ten bottled beers. Four own beers I sampled were good. Service was good. Served food, looked good but didnít try it. Pretty good value for money - 4 glass (~200ml) sampler for 75RMB. (BTW, I visited first on the Friday before Halloween and turned away as it was no longer a bar but a Halloween party disco with staff in cat costumes.)
Great beer, and ya gotta love Shanghai. Apparently Boxing Cat was started by a couple of guys from Oregon, and it shows. Very Pacific Northwest styles of beer, strong and hoppy. There are some interesting stories about them establishing the brewing operation in China, convincing the authorities that they were legitimate. I was told that they grow their own ingredients from seed and stock brought from the US. The staff was dressed in cool sports jersey tops, and I wanted to buy one (said "Boxing Cat Brewery" with their logo on the front and "Shanghai 08" on the back). What a fuss that caused! They didnít quite know how to deal with it, staff tripping over one another - but an hour later, we left with our jerseys, RMB100... Just a few blocks from where the Chinese Communist Party was established, in Xiantiandi (ironically, that site charges admission).
Close to my regular hotel so will be a regular now.
No set beers as such, just regular ever changing brews.
My visit in Novemeber 2014 had Right Hook Helles, Standing 8 Pislner, Contender Extra Pale Ale, Donkey Punch porter, a rancid Pumpkin and TKO IPA.
Food is a Western menu.
Canít remember Wifi.
Should be here on Feb 8th.
Location near Xiantiandi. 3 floors, 1st for drinks, 2nd for food, 3rd is for private functions I believe. I ordered a taster at 85 yuan for 6 small beers but they tried to say it is a happy hour thing though the menu clearly stated All Day. Anyways, I won out and scored the 6 taster for about 1600 yen so similarly priced to Japan. Rudimentary English. Kind of surprised they only had 6 taps plus nothing black on tap either. Nice wood & fake? brick decor with pretty good beers, service was alright and the food was alright but expect western pricing - 5700 yen about 57$ got us the fried mac ní cheese croquettes, a plate of sliders, the 6 tasters & a big ass burger. So decent prices but kind of high for China then again the last time i visited was 9 years ago so what do i know... A must stop in Shanghai if you enjoy good beer.
Better location than the other one being amid an area of hotels and bars. Decent selection of beers although slightly disappointing there was nothing dark on tap. Y35 per beer in happy hour is great value. A must visit in Shanghai.
I really liked this place. You walk in and thereís a really cool vibe to the place. I felt like I was in a brew pub in the states. The place is divided up between a few floors. The first floor is the bar area, and the second was seating for the restaurant. I think thereís a third floor but we didnít go past the second. When I was there, they had six beers they make on tap, got a taster set of each, which is a good way to go. The tasters were huge, like half a pint each. The beer was good. No noticeable problems, infections, or off flavors from unclean lines. After a week and a half in China, it was great to get an IPA that actually tasted like an IPA. Food menu looked solid, mostly western brewpubby type stuff. I had the Fried Chicken with Mac and Cheese and really enjoyed it. Would totally go back to next time Iím in Shanghai. Had a good selection of beer which seems to rotate depending on whatís available and a nice vibe to it making it a easy place to hang out at.
