2014-02-16. The Monarch has been on my beer radar for a while now but the main reason we came tonight was to have dinner at the Baju BBQ location in the upstairs. Food wise it was pretty fantastic. Our "Pork Out" platter offered several meat options and sides. The brisket was slightly more well done than some at the table preferred but I loved it. Ribs were pretty great, I actually ate mine sans sauce for the most part and enjoyed the interesting dry rub. Pulled pork was decent but I still find it strange getting unsauced pulled pork. I get that it gives you the option to sauce it yourself but itís not quite the same for me. The two sauces available were both great, but the Carolina mustard sauce (?) was my favorite of the two. The sides were pretty solid as well. There were about 10 local microbrews on tap, I opted for several pints of the Great Lakes Swamp Juice IPA. The bar itself is the kind of unpretentious well worn green carpeted (or am I misremembering that?) tavern/bar with character that I donít find myself in very often anymore! It was fun, with an interesting mix music. Jason from Baju and the bartender chatted with us off and on as we devoured our platters. I would definitely come back if in the neighbourhood but would probably only make a special trip if I was planning to eat.
