64 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 6/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE 10/10 OVERALL 14/20
PROS: A cozy place with a completely friendly and genuine feel- it seems like the owner knew everyone walking through the door, or knew them before they left. He didnít leave the dining area, sitting with customers and exchanging banter comfortably. It also seems like everything- everything- is on sale. Itís like a restaurant and a flea market- but without the fleas. Service was of the same relaxed feel, but not by any means slow. You donít feel rushed to make a choice here. Food is very good, and INSANELY CHEAP. HOW DOES THIS MAN STAY IN BUSINESS? 7.99 for a black bean burger (very tasty) and TWO sides. CHILDREN SIX AND UNDER EAT *FREE*. ALWAYS. FLIPPINí ALWAYS. A good representation of local and regional beer (Alltech, BBC, Schlafly) and some Unibroue, etc. Beer is also pretty cheap, my bottle was 3.50 (Schlafly APA) and they sell PBR for 1.50 a can all day. No, the place was not crawling with hipsters. CONS: Beer, if not consumed from bottle or can, is poured in a frosty mug or clear plastic cup. Beer selection could use a little amping up, but itís solid if not a little simple. OVERALL: A great little place in the Germantown/Smoketown area. The owner is a self-proclaimed "Redneck Jew" and walks around in overalls and a ball cap. You can choose where you sit; most of the tables are mid-century and there are a few interesting booths against the wall. This place is a hoot. Street parking in the area, which can be a bit sketchy (I wouldnít call it dangerous by any means). There is a lot by the place that belongs to some company; that might be cool during off hours- might be worth calling ahead. A great, cheap place to eat if youíll be in town, and in a central location to lots of other stops (within 10 minutes of any other great beer place in Louisville) and walking distance from Eiderdown, Nachbar and maybe Four Pegs. Canít recommend it enough.
