Located just a block in from Ocean Drive, the Commons Ale House is well placed in terms of easy access to where most of the hotels are in SM.
I visited around 4pm on the afternoon of Wednesday 16/04/14 and the place was ticking over, most of the dozen or so bar stools were taken and a few of the 8 or so tables were also occupied.
A fairly small venue with 20 solid taps (19 were on) offering largely local(ish) CA micros from the likes of El Segundo, High Water, Modern Times, Hangar 24 et al, plus a couple from Europe and other states.
The 20 beers are clearly displayed on wooden boards behind the bar, 4 beers across and 5 deep. Don’t make the same mistake as I did on the ’coming soon’ beer(s) which was 2nd down from the top on the right hand side. I presumed that the 3 beers displayed below this sign were not available yet, then I saw someone being served one.
Turns out it was just the 17th tap that was ’coming soon’ !
Service was prompt and friendly and the guy new his stuff.
I thought this placed was a little pricey, maybe just the loaction in SM as prices were more reasonable in Library Alehouse 15/20 minutes walk from downtown.
A 12oz pour of a locally produced 6% IPA was $6 - NYC is cheaper !!!
The tickers friend, tasting flights, also available $12 for 4 beers 3oz beers, again very pricey for what you get but when you are conducting business at the bar without a wimgman or two, flights are a big help.
Overall a solid venue.

New craft beer centric bar in Santa Monica. Great opening hours, friendly staff, and a solid craft beer and craft cider list. Had a Ninkasi tap takeover when I was there. All beers are served in mason jars which is fun, but could be annoying to some hardcore purists. Prices were low, $5-7 it seemed for even high abv stuff. They had Deschutes XXV Black Butte Anniversary on tap as just Black Butte. One is 11.5% and the other is 5.5%. It was still $5 per mason jar. Great deal, but someone in the group that was watching calories was not happy about that. They have board games and host cool events like stand up comedy and scavenger hunts. Trendy, hip place. Small interior with only a few tables and a small bar to sit at. But fun, cheap, and one of the better beer bars if not the best that is in the dead center of Santa Monica in the shopping district/Promenade area.
