This place is all about the beer range - without that, and you wouldnít bother. Itís a scruffy and dull single room with crap pub carpet. No atmosphere. No view. Nine casks. Simple rolls and bags of crisps for food. Itís a place for old men. Itís a place to come and die in. I suspect some people have already died here and not yet been moved on. You seriously would not bring your family here. Nor your wife or girlfriend. I donít think they even have a womenís toilet. It speaks volumes for the scarcity of good pubs in Southampton that people call this the best pub in the city.

Excellent smallish boozer hidden away on a side street. Between St Maryís Stadium and St Denys train station. Worth seeking out as it is by far the best pub in the city. 8-9 handpumps on from a range of breweries. Choice of halves, pints, 1/3 or 2/3. Beer unfailingly in perfect condition, with very reasonable prices. The best Fullerís ESB you are likely to have.

Well-decorated with CAMRA awards, but beyond that itís a genuinely good homely localsí joint that happens to have a few good taps like yummy Dark Star Hophead. Super service, too. The decor is nothing but it has super character nonetheless.

A great beer-lovers pub tucked away in a quiet backstreet. Friendly locals and staff and a good range of mainly local beers.

Visited on 09/09/12.
Single roomed local a bit like someones living room with board games in an alcove and bowl of help yourself mini chocolate bars!
6 or 7 beers on cask, Fullers ESB seemed to be a permanent with others on my visit from Oakleaf, Fulflood Arms, Flowerpots (a stout) and Dark Star.
Friendly service, I even called them the day after to check on the full name of a beer Iíd rated and they were more than happy to assist. We visited here on a mini crawl around St Denys having previously visited the excellent Bitter Virtue off licence, some 10 minutes or so away.

This is a decent back street boozer. The ambiance is a bit scruffy and rundown. This is a working manís pub. Thereís about 6 beers on cask plus the usual suspects on keg. The cask beers were mostly local, a nice touch. The prices were quite good, but all prices outside of central London look cheap to me these days. The service was very friendly, familiar. Even though I was the only non-regular in the pub, I was still made to feel welcome. Overall, a nice place to have a pint if youíre in the area.

A proper pub, and a very well kept secret. Great Triple FFF beer, and not dominated by Ringwood like a lot of other pubs in the city.

The best pub in the city, and a relatively well kept secret....would sometines rather it stayed this way. The beer selection is invariably well kept, and the service from all the bar staff, let alone mein hosts, is second to none. The seem to care about what they serve, and how itís served. The beer selection is always good...usually a few standards (ESB, a Bowman brew, and other commercial íbeersí for the less discerning palette), but the rotation of the guests is what gives this place its edge in the city. There may only be 5 or 6, but its a place the size of your living room. Add to that, the fact that this is a a proper free house, not an Enterprise place, and a pint costs you alomost a quid less than anywhere else in town. Warm, friendly, inviting. If I have a few issues they are minor; sometimes their guest ales are a bit samey, and PROPER scratchings would top this place off for me. No food, bar the odd ham roll, and Margaretís pickled eggs are stuff of legend (especially the chilli variety). Gets very full just before k.o. on match days, and on Friday nights. However, no hurley-burley here, just good conversation, lovely beer, and a warm welcome. Utterly recommended.

Best kept beer in the city. 7 hand pumps with a selection of bottles. Very reasonable prices, with a Friday deal whereby one beer is £2.40 a pint (others ~£2.80 per pint). Meat draw every Friday & occasional quizzes. Voted best pub in the Wessex region in 2010 by an independent CAMRA panel and nearly advanced to the final 4 of the national competition. Small, always busy and always very good. A range of rolls & snacks are available, with proceeds going to charity.

The best selection of real ales anywhere in Southampton. Up to eight ales on handpull. Small pub that feels like the front room of someoneís house. Proper community pub where you can strike up a conversation with anyone. Fair prices with a "pint of the week" often available. Supporter of the guide dog charity and runs a number of events including a weekly meat draw and darts competitions. Hosts events such as an annual "beer and bangers" night in conjunction with the local South Hampshire CAMRA branch. Paul and Margaret and their staff are very helpful and happy to take recommendations and offer tasters.
This pub is also very popular with supporters of Southampton FC and can get very busy (standing room only!) on match days.
If you only have time to visit one pub in Southampton make it this one.
