One of the few places in town that serves cask beers. Less than 20 taps and a bunch of bottles. Taps are rotated regularly including previously have KBS on tap.
Food is also most pub food - hot dogs, burgers, etc.
Only annoying thing is that the place is cash only.
Hard to miss basement bar a few blocks near Fenway. The draft selection was heavy on interstate offerings and only a couple of local brews on my visit. I went for the Jackís Abby pils as nothing else really grabbed my attention but Iíve heard the taps rotate pretty regularly. The bartender was OK, service indifferent. I felt this place was pretty tacky and not somewhere I would linger for too long. Cash only.
This is my go-to place in Boston. I always seek to try something new and the Lower Depths usually has at three brews Iíve never tried before. The taps are rotated regularly.
The food is pretty good for bar fare. I do recommend the hot dogs where you get to "pimp your toppings". It is inexpensive with great variety of toppings to choose.
Itís a bit off, but not a long walk away. Itís always a bit of a turn off when the bar forces you to drink big portions and isntí willing to serve half pints, but thatís the only complaint really. Great selection, friendly staff, decent atmosphere. Worth the walk.
Seedy atmosphere is like a proper dive bar. Good selection of beer, emphasis on crafts as opposed to industrials. Music is a bit loud, but not so as to make conversation impossible. Lady behind the bar is efficient and alert, makes you feel welcome. Stools at the bar are padded but still not too comfy. Tables are available as well. Food is good, tasty and reasonably priced. Worth a visit if youíre in the Boston area, or visiting for a few days.
Pretty average place. One positive is a pretty good tap lineup. Locally focused, as others have said. The place is crowded, but not in a good way. The $1 hot dog is indicative of their ironic approach to food. The service seems a little smarmy. Itís an OK stop if youíre in the area, but Bukowski does the same thing and does it better, and is only a few blocks away.
Probably one of my favorite beer bars while in Boston.
Daytime visit was great on a rainy day with the entire bar to myself. The garrulous bartender was helpful with samples, though it wasnít hard to opt for the Founders Breakfast Stout.
Draft selection had mostly regional craft beers with a few quality imports. Bottle selection was very good but not excellent.
Location is convenient right off the green line and is a cool underground spot near the India Quality restaurant. Great for daytime drinking but I would reconsider for evening and/or game nights, given the proximity to Fenway.
