Having visited now for a number of Great Taste related events I can say that Brasserie V has carved out a niche in the Madison beer scene. Well worth a visit, its only weakness might be the parking situation as it sits on a busy street between downtown and the eastern residential areas.

Attention to detail includes proper glassware, temperature, and careful pours. Drafts can be more than average but this is due as much to the rarity than trying to gouge you for an extra dollar. I would say that two people could order beers and a meal for around $50 which isn’t terrible since the food is more upscale than Great Dane or a bar.

Make it a point to stop by here on the trip between downtown and Vintage. You won’t be disappointed. As a bonus if you are a Trader Joe’s fan you can go across the street to grab a few cheap rates.

Stopped in in the Friday before Great Taste, 2015. Very full with standing room only. Service was still surprisingly helpful and friendly for how busy they were. One of the best tap lists I have seen anywhere, Pannepot on tap; several sours as well. Lots of Belgian beer, in bottles, some lambics included. I didn’t eat but the food look and smelled amazing. Ambiance is upscale Euro bistro.

Visited on GTMW eve. Comfortably crowded, and both the space and the staff handled the crowd well. This place is in what looks like formerly two adjacent buildings, and the large bar covers the space between them, and almost fills the entire space. Few tables at the periphery. Tap and bottle list included a wide range of Belgians and Belgian styles from the US and Europe, and even a mead from South Africa. Oh, and a great list of Perennial stuff, with the Perennial crew imbibing as well. Staff were working hard but kept up nicely, and were helpful and knowledgeable. Decent prices. Cheese plate was awesome. Easily the best GTMW eve event that I tried, by a wide margin. Great vibe. Great place.

Nice cozy atmosphere. Dug the sourced food. Tasted fresh. Toppling Goliath on tap, can’t go wrong. A tad cramped. All-in-all quality.

My third visit to Brasserie V was last week on the eve of the GTMW. I had visited a few years back (before they expanded next door - which is a huge improvement!) and went there for an anniversary dinner a few years ago as well. I have to bump the Ambiance up to 5 because there was a bartender who had on a shirt that said ’Craft Beer, Hail Satan’ on, which I now must have. Service was good, though a bit slow. The place got slammed though as the special tappings of Perennial and Side Project began. Decent tap list - many things from overseas and on the saison side of the spectrum. Large bottle list as well (over priced, as is typical in a restaurant). From my previous visit I remember the food being very nice, though certainly on the expensive side. Side note: Do not park on the street that the restaurant is on during the week - its a tow zone for rush hour traffic!!

What a gem! I enjoyed an order of moules & frites that were outstanding last night, but the kicker was an Oerbier draft from a wooden cask branded Schneiderweis...the spigot was Lowenbrau. The cask had been tapped on Sunday, and it was beautiful on the following Tuesday. All bottles beers are $2 off on Tuesdays as well, so I was able to compare and contrast the bottled Oerbier with the cask version...big difference, but both versions were great. Brasserie V is without a doubt in my mind, the best Belgian cafe that I’ve visited in the US. Highly recommended and worth a detour.

I put Brasserie V as the best beer bar in Madison. The selection is always great the food, while limited, is top notch, locally sourced (usually) and not standard pub fare. While they usually have some standard Belgians, they always have some rarities on tap and a hug selection in the bottles. Lots of events that are well done. A gem in a beery town.

Visited August 10, 2012 (GTMW eve).

This place is on a dark street (or at least it was dark when I went) and I was questioning the cab driver until we pulled up and I saw the small sign above the door. They had a bunch of Destihl beers on tap which were fun to try. Three sours and three non sours, most of which were good. The place was pretty full but I had no problem getting a glass of everything I wanted. Prices were reasonable, service was good, and the place although packed was friendly enough.
