Place with great beer selection that is second to none. The place is an odd basement between buildings. The service did the best they could with how crowded it was. We got a plate to snack on that was nice with build your own cheese and meat plate. Go here for good beer but not really a great hangout place.

Off hectic Exchange Street, through an iron gate beneath a Key Bank sign, and comfortably hidden away from the tourists and bustle of the Old Port, in a quiet courtyard-parking lot, the ardent beer lover will find himself (or herself) here at this paean to the Belgian café. It is a must when in town.
Upon entering the dim and intimate brick-wood interior, there are two choices: turn left into a separate lounge area furnished with black comfy chairs; or remain in the bar area with several communal tables and two bars: a moderately-sized one that dominates the room, or the very small one at the far right (adjacent to the kitchen). All of this surrounded by beer paraphernalia galore. Think of it as being in the basement of the Beer God.
My visit occurred during the recent Portland Beer Week and on tap (7 drafts) was one of the city’s newer brewers, Rising Tide. Of course, Novare Res, which is Latin for “Start a Revolution,” specializes in area crafts, so there were many other locals available to quench; such as four taps from Sebago, seven from Allagash and several from Maine’s Marshall Wharf. This being a Belgian café, they also had about ten draft Belgians and a massive spiral-bound list of international bottles.
The menu was eclectic but limited. My chicken curry wrap was tasty. The service excelled in every way with the attentive servers being efficient and well versed in beer, and the crafts poured at the correct temperature in the appropriate glassware. Novare Res is family-owned, so this must be one reason.
This place is simply one great place to hang out, quaff superb beers and to experience a seriously pleasant evening. No wonder Beer Advocate rates it as World Class. Start the revolution without me; I’ll be at Novare Res!

This was an odd place. When you walk in it seems like a basement bar yet its huge and seems to go on for ever. Divey type decor but good Belgian and local selection, food is not that great but fills you up. staff know their beer and the lack of pretention is quite nice.

Another wonderful place in Maine. I intended on walking around Portland and exploring but spent way too much time in this bar trying the beers. Great imported Belgian tap list with some good locals to boot. Great service as well. A close second only to Ebenezer’s in the state.

A little difficult to find, but well worth it. A comfortable outdoor area leads to a cavernous old world style beer bar. Good food, nice tap and bottle selection. Good music and service. A must if your in the Portland area.

Great beer bar with the vibe of an old, Belgian bar. Service was good, but the place wasn’t crowded at the time and I assume that’s not always the case. Tap selection was great with plenty of rare kegs. Bottle selection was equally impressive with pages and pages of bottles organized by style. Great place overall.

Visited during the Twelve Percent and Shelton Bros fest, and Urbain took us backstage to the bwers area. Free food and free beer, can’t beat that. It was a bit odd for staff to almost snatch the beers out of our hands at closing time, but that was the only minor quibble in an otherwise great visit. Tap and bottle lists were very solid, great atmosphere.
