68 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 5/10 SELECTION 12/15 FOOD 5/10 VALUE 5/10 OVERALL 14/20 rylaad (2) Ontario | February 12, 2011 Alright service, great selection of beer I was really surprised. Not very surprised at the price though because everything at western is expensive, not the place to go if you want cheap pitchers. Their pizza is usually good during the day, lots of toppings. Good crowd on the weekend. | 62 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 6/10 SELECTION 9/15 FOOD 6/10 VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 13/20 cratez (151) Toronto, Ontario | July 11, 2010| Updated January 24, 2012 I never expected to find a decent beer bar at UWO, but The Grad Club fits that bill. The strength of this place is an above average tap list, at reasonable value, with a lively atmosphere to boot. Vibe is sit-down conversational during the day with an infinite number of wooden tables and chairs. Kitchen is at the back, bar is right by the front doors, tap handles and beer fridge are nicely visible, and a chalkboard lists the draught offerings. Every Thursday night, the legendary Rick McGee pounds out classic tunes on stage, which provides a great backdrop for drinking beer with friends. It can be a bit loud, but whatever. Service is unexceptional as there usually aren’t enough waiters to take everyone’s orders, and the bartender is typically so busy that he doesn’t have time to chat. But if you go to the bar you don’t have to wait long for drinks. Selection is better than you’d expect for a campus bar. Taps include Wellington County Ale, Unibroue Blanche De Chambly, Mill Street Tankhouse, Scotch Ale, and Cobblestone Stout, Creemore Springs Lager, Okanagan Pale Ale, and Big Rock Traditional. Bottles focus on macros but the selection is large, probably 20 brands. Pilsner Urquell stands out among the rest. Food is no prize. Every dish is paired with fries, it often takes a while to arrive at the table, and the quality is just okay. There’s some decent breakfast dishes, if beer with bacon & eggs is your thing. Prices are reasonable as you might pay $5-7 for a pint and no more than $9-11 for food. This place is comparable to The Church Key and Ale House when it comes to selection, and the atmosphere is pretty cool. The website claims TGC is "meant" for grad students, but they rarely check for student I.D. and non-students imbibe here regularly. Overall, The Grad Club is a welcomed oasis on campus. | 62 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 6/10 SELECTION 8/15 FOOD 7/10 VALUE N/A OVERALL 14/20 Maltybones (17) Calgary, Alberta | April 7, 2009| Updated January 24, 2012 Tap line up is nothing special. A few Ontario micros with the occasional Unibroue product. Atmosphere has a good beer-hall feel to it when it’s packed, but it serves more as a gathering spot for grad students than a beer/drinking destination most times. Always a little more pricey than other places in town. Unless you are a student and always on campus, hit up Chaucer’s instead. | 64 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 6/10 SELECTION 10/15 FOOD N/A VALUE N/A OVERALL 13/20 MrManning (60) Hamilton, Ontario | March 28, 2007 Sometimes they ask for ID, sometimes they ask for student ID. SOmetimes the service is good. Taps are blanche de chambly, wellington SPA, big rock trad ale, and steamwhistle plus some rotation micro taps, with all the macros. Sum it up, 5 micro taps, with standard service, and a bunch of pretentious grad students. |
