80 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 11/15 FOOD 9/10 VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 16/20 phaleslu (314) Cincinnati, Ohio | March 23, 2010 Greenbush Bar is located in the basement of the Italian Workmen’s Club in the traditionally Italian neighborhood of Madison called Greenbush. The area has gentrified and changed a lot, but the organization has occupied the top floor of this building since 1922 and the Greenbush Bar has been open under the current ownership since the early 1990s. The atmosphere is warm and cozy; the space is not large and has a curving bar on the right with about 20+ tables in all. Christmas lights line the ceiling year-round to add to the dim lighting. There is one TV, so don’t come here expecting a sports bar. Come here for the awesome pizza (best in Madison), outstanding Italian food, and good selection of local brews. There are 8 taps, including 7 local/regional brewers (Lake Louie, New Glarus, Milwaukee Ale House, Ale Asylum, Central Waters, Capital, and another I can’t recall) and Guinness. 16 bottles include some familiar European staples along with a constantly-rotating selection of Wisconsin brews (and none of the crappy ones). The overall selection isn’t wide, but the Wisconsin selection is top-notch. The owner and manager work hard to buy locally for almost all food ingredients and most of the beer, Guinness and the other Euro bottles being the obvious exceptions. The prices are very fair, competitive with inferior restaurants that use lousy mass-produced ingredients, and the service is excellent. I come here every time I visit Madison and find something new to like each time. |
