Big, well-lit warehouse type space on the east side of the bridge. Hard to find parking on a friday night, but the place was not crowded. You can look in the window and see their unusual brewing operations. They have lots of their famous big beers on tap in small and taster sizes. Not a huge list however. Food is a bit rudimentary, but tasty enough. Fun place to come and get some world-class beer.

First wrote this review in March of 2013. Just returned a couple of months ago. The beers just keep getting better...the place is the staff...flight glasses are cool. I have no issues with! Even better than 3 years ago. (the original review: love the place...staff is great...Do these guys have great beers or what? Or even better...original beers. This is a very cool place...somewhat industrial dťcor in a cool way. The staff is helpful and attentive. HOD was one of the high points of my recent Portland visit. Make it a must stop on your next one.)

Visited there over the holiday. Nice place, good beer (only theirs), and ok food. The service was a bit cold, but eh, what are you gonna do? Cozy.

Different than what I expected. Old sparse building. Beers were good of course, like I expected. Service was fine. Nothing exceptional. Got to try some offerings that do not come in a bottle. I wanted to try the duck wings, but it being nine oíclock when I got here, I decided to give the kitchen a break. Basic beers were a good value, but some barrel aged offerings were a little more pricey, $4 for a taster. Anyway, I can cross this one off my list. If I do come to Portland again, I will come back.

Visited during dinner time on a Tuesday. Big space, located on a corner, just over the bridge from downtown Portland. 4 picnic tables located outside, big U shaped bar, and plenty of seating throughout the big room. 12 beers on draft, along with vintage bottles on sale for on-site consumption. Additionally, the recent release were for sale to go (Putin and Adam from the Stone). The food menu is chef driven, I ordered and enjoyed the Chuck Norris duck wings. The pour of Fred I had was well over 12 oz in a tulip, and I believe was only $4.95 so appreciated the prices. Great vibe, knowledgeable friendly service at the bar. Hair of the Dog was an early influence for me as I was getting into craft beer, and it was great being able to finally visit.

88 = ★★★★ (best in area, a must for locals and visitors)

I only use the total score, not the component parts.

Itís a small warehouse, with nice timber beams, pillars, counter, although the kitchen island disturbs the sight; very relaxed atmosphere, although at the time of the visit the music was not always the best, at least the level is very soft and the conversation is possible. The food selection is small but I hope I will manage to try it someday. Wifi available.
I feel like being in the belly of America. Said so, itís a pilgrimage place, but not the most impressive one.

Not a wide choice, but Most of their beers, other when IPAís are exceptional. IPA is below average.

Perhaps the crown jewel of the Portland breweries. Cool industrial space with a really open feel to it. U-shaped bar and plenty of tables all around the outside.

Perhaps a little hard to judge the service here as they let our group in early, gave us some free tastes, and a tour for the RBSG group. But all well appreciated and everyone who came in later seemed to be well taken care of.

Kind of amazing, even shocking, that these guys basically havenít updated or improved anything in 20+ years since they started in the early 90s. Everything basically done manually, by hand, with no automation.

The beers here, are mostly good. Though of course I sought to try some of the random new stuff I had not had before, so some of those were misses. But overall good prices on everything and some cool tap room only offerings as well as lots of neat bottles.

The food here was also quite good as well, which I was a bit surprised by for some reason. Highly recommend a stop for lunch.
