Re-Rate. My previous review was from back before the brewpub opened. It was from when Alan was brewing in a garage, essentially. The new space is large and spacious. Looks to be an old machine shop. The decor is fairly crazy. It almost reminds me of some gaudy Mexican taqueria. Regardless, the food here was absolutely delicious, and the menu had plenty of tempting choices. My bartender was unable to really give me much information about the beer. There was an impressive list of vintage bottles on the menu, and plenty of beers on tap. I’ll definitely come back~~~~~~~~~~~~(Previous rating) Made my way here on a Monday afternoon shortly after the bottled release of Fred from the Wood--GO BUY IT. This place is challenging to find to say the very least. There is a stairwell from the sidewalk on the main little drag that brings you to 24th ave--TAKE IT. Signage is also not overly large. Very small, industrial garage-like feel that’s not all that different from Alesmith. Once inside, I met up with Alan--I didn’t realize that this was basically a 1 man-show. We chatted for about 15-20 minutes and offered me some samples from the 5 or so samples on the wall. There were also some vintage bottles for sale as well. He was brewing and gave me a really quick tour, which is easy due to the operation being very small. I didn’t want to bother him while he was busy brewing, so I basically bought a couple of bottles and let him go onto producing his great beer. Unfortunately, this place is rated as the top place in all of Portland, and it clearly is not. I think this is due to people giving it a perfect score for food when it doesn’t even serve food. Alan mentioned that he was going to be decreasing his distribution because he is currently brewing at full capacity and local sales are good enough that it does not make fiscal sense to distribute to 15 states any more.

Unassuming open air place that looks like it used to be a garage. Lots of cool stuff on tap including a rotating beer "From the Wood" and one "From the Stone." I got Fred From the Wood and found my first perfect 5 beer. They also have a huge list of expensive vintage bottles available for on-site consumption only. I ordered a 2013 Otto but the waitress told me to try the 2016 first and if I wasn’t satisfied, she’d buy me the 2013. How cool is that? Although I ended up wishing I had taken her up on her offer--the 2016 was a little hot and underdeveloped I thought--I walked away from this place very satisfied as a customer. That was some really great service. I would like to come here again sans kids and try more of what they have to offer.

Visited this rather early on a Wednesday in March 2016. Located not far from Cascade, a place that we walked from. The place was rather large and not crowded. The service was good. Wifi available. The best beer that I drank was the Pannepooch Reserva, a bottle cost 20 USD. A bottle of Dave cost 1500 USD, well maybe next time.

Place fairly busy early saturday night, louder than you’d expect. big windows looking toward the river and downtown across it. Didn’t eat anything, but the food looks and smells great, home cured deli meats a specialty. But its all about the beer. Have long been a fan of their early break through work. Quality stuff. Had a small glass of cherry Adam from the wood, like cherry sherry, so smooth and strong. And had Fred, hoppy edge along with the rich dark malt. Sat at the bar, & chatted some with the chef who was off work and having a couple beers before heading home with a growler. this place the real deal, beers you won’t find anywhere else.

Big, well-lit warehouse type space on the east side of the bridge. Hard to find parking on a friday night, but the place was not crowded. You can look in the window and see their unusual brewing operations. They have lots of their famous big beers on tap in small and taster sizes. Not a huge list however. Food is a bit rudimentary, but tasty enough. Fun place to come and get some world-class beer.

First wrote this review in March of 2013. Just returned a couple of months ago. The beers just keep getting better...the place is great...love the staff...flight glasses are cool. I have no issues with HOD...lol! Even better than 3 years ago. (the original review: love the place...staff is great...Do these guys have great beers or what? Or even better...original beers. This is a very cool place...somewhat industrial décor in a cool way. The staff is helpful and attentive. HOD was one of the high points of my recent Portland visit. Make it a must stop on your next one.)

Visited there over the holiday. Nice place, good beer (only theirs), and ok food. The service was a bit cold, but eh, what are you gonna do? Cozy.

Different than what I expected. Old sparse building. Beers were good of course, like I expected. Service was fine. Nothing exceptional. Got to try some offerings that do not come in a bottle. I wanted to try the duck wings, but it being nine o’clock when I got here, I decided to give the kitchen a break. Basic beers were a good value, but some barrel aged offerings were a little more pricey, $4 for a taster. Anyway, I can cross this one off my list. If I do come to Portland again, I will come back.
