On the first corner on the other side of the Westgate Station railway bridge to its entrance with its brightly blue cafe-bar style exterior. It’s all bar inside with a very wooden dominant appearance but with a pseudo old-world charm including barrel tables, wooden pews and plenty of original building features incorporated into the design. There is however a slightly odd thatched-roof above the bar which sports a number of real ale pumps including a decent selection of Clarke’s ales for which this place is the flagship outlet for the local microbrewer. It’s also a place to come for live sport and live music.

Unfortunately, it seems like this is actually one of the best pubs in Wakefield. The pub interior’s truly bizzare. The bar itself is covered it thatching to give you the impression that it’s a building within a building. The rest of the room’s pretty rundown and univiting. Loud fruit and quiz machines. TVs showing sport. Aggressive-looking locals slumped over pints of pale lager. The service was extraordinarily slow despite the fact that the pub wasn’t very busy. The selection’s not great. There’s 5 casks, only 4 of which were on. All four cask beers on offer were 4% golden ales. The keg stuff’s the usual crap. I’ll give them credit for having Coors Light on keg though. That’s actually sort of rare in England. No bottles worth mention. The value’s OK. Overall, consider skipping this place.

Tap for the Clark’s brewery situated behind the building. Multiple Clark’s beers plus local brews from medium - small operations, situated 50 yards from Wakefield Westgate train station and in the middle of the famous Westgate Run.
