I fell in love with this place at first sight. A brass band, the best German beer list that Iíve seen in a restaurant (even surpassing anywhere I visited in Germany!), and good food. The one downside was that all tables were first come, first serve and most of the people were parked at their tables for the entire polka night. I would recommend getting there early if itís polka night.

An unassuming, yet outstanding, little German bier hall tucked right into the downtown Des Moines area, this place gets it right. The menu is a delightful mix of American and German cuisine, and downright tasty to boot. The serving staff seem to know their bier, and their German pronunciations, though service can be a little on the slow side during busy times (such as lunchtime on a Saturday). Any place that can make a good kassler rippchen and schweinshaxe is good by me, and even better when they offer muenster cheese in multiple dishes! As far as bier selection goes, I have not seen a wider nor better curated selection of tap and bottled German imports anywhere else in the US (or what few parts of Canada Iíve seen). Various standbys from Weihenstephaner, Ayinger, and Schneider have permanent taps, with a decent rotating mix of other German imports, local German-style brews, and the occasional Belgian thrown in. Beer sizes available for order include the expected half-liter, liter, and, of course, boot. This may not be a hop addictís dream bar, but as far as my dream bar is concerned, itís a reasonable facsimile thereof!

I had a great time here. A unique german restaurant with an awesome selection of german beers. We came on polka night, so the place was packed. You should try to get there early if it is a Saturday night, because it was really busy, and most people were staying all night.

Without a doubt the best German food Iíve ever had. Iíd make a trip to Des Moines to eat here alone. Strange little building with a fun German themed bar hall. Lots of German beers. Go eat here!!

Located in an old train depot, this place feels really German or how I imagine Germany to look like having never actually been there. They had mostly German stuff on tap with the Evil Twin Even More Jesus being a real surprise find. The place was packed and had a really good atmosphere even if it was mostly those under 25.

Hit up this joint with my boy Jake while in town for bid-ness. Not a huge place, but had a cool old school type vibe. Focus is on German beers of course, but they did have quite a few other European bottles available. Pretty hysterical when some dude broke one of the drinking boots and then had to pay $50 for it. Looking forward to visiting again, but when the weather is a bit nicer.

This is a fine place to visit if you enjoy German Lagers vom fass. Beer served in half liters, maŖ, and boot. Fairly large place with good food as well. Great crowd when a live polka band is playing. Everyone sings along. The website usually lists what they are pouring. One block away from Court Avenue Brewing. Only bad thing is that they allow smoking. Bring your respirator with you.
