This is the bar located upstairs from the epic beer shop downstairs. Quite a quirky and fun interior. They have a bout 6 taps of decent enough beer including some Arbor when I visited. The great thing is you guy buy ANY beer from down stairs and drink it here, making the actual bottle selection about 500, so great! Do yourself a favour and grab a beer from downstairs!

This medieval drinking area is now extremely popular, and often now difficult to get into. 7 pr 8 beers on either cask or keg, with range of bottles, plus the option of bringing things up from the excellent shop downstairs.

Even though this place doesnít have a great selection of beers, I really liked being able to make a selection downstairs and have the lads or lasses chill it for you for quaffing upstairs. The meat and cheese platters were magnificent! The place was crawling with students and tourists and everybody added to the bonhomie of the gathering. On one occasion I was seated next to a table full of visitors from Japan and they could not have been more delightful. This place probably doesnít appeal to the beer cognoscenti, but they would be missing a great time! Recommended!

Inviting bar upstairs from the beer shop. Heaps of wood, stuffed animals and such. Very busy but managed to grab a seat at the small bar so I didnít order any food but it looked tasty. The crew were busy pouring pints and prepping plates of food in a rather confined space. Good atmosphere. Really liked it up here.

(A review of the bar, not including the excellent beer shop downstairs). Last time I visited York it was too crowded to find a free chair here. This time we went before noon on a Friday and found the place rather empty (for a while). Itís a medium sized, four-sided room located in the first floor of in a timber framed building (15th century) with a small serving bar near the entrance. Only three cask ales from microbreweries in Yorkshire added by a few on keg. Exhibition of animals heads on the walls. Polite service. The place is special for its old charm and worth a visit. Entrance from the shop downstairs (visited 11.07.2014).

Finally got to call in here after hearing about this place for so long, but sadly left disappointed. Went straight upstairs where the dining area was pretty cramped, full of tourists marvelling at the dusty stuffed animals and wooden beams.

They are the only selling point for this place. The staff are pretty clueless and kitchen looked filthy. I ordered a pie which never arrived. When I asked about it 30 mins later, I got baffled looks. Asked for a refund and got no apology.

I asked one member of staff if the ciders were local. She said no. I googled the ciders and they are produced about 20 mins North from York. If you donít know, fair enough but donít lie.

Sad to say but felt like a tourist trap. Beer room downstairs felt like walking into an oven too.

I studied for four months in York this past winter. Found Trembling Madness about half way through and it was by far my favourite bar in the city. I never ate there as it is rather small and couldnít get in once because there were too many people upstairs already. It is small but worth it. The options on tap regularly change. If in York it is well worth it to stop in

This is really two venues in one. The bottle shop downstairs is absolutely superb with a vast range of beers from the UK and around the world at reasonable(ish) prices, friendly service from the bloke on the till. The bar upstairs is pretty quirky although small and busy. Quite a small beer selection at the bar and itís not cheap although they have some very good stuff on. The food is amazing, we polished off two platters and a cheese board between three of us, but service was painfully slow; I donít think it should take the best part of an hour to put a few bits of meat, cheese and bread on a board and dish it up. Worth a visit, nontheless.
