(A review of the bar, not including the excellent beer shop downstairs). Last time I visited York it was too crowded to find a free chair here. This time we went before noon on a Friday and found the place rather empty (for a while). Itís a medium sized, four-sided room located in the first floor of in a timber framed building (15th century) with a small serving bar near the entrance. Only three cask ales from microbreweries in Yorkshire added by a few on keg. Exhibition of animals heads on the walls. Polite service. The place is special for its old charm and worth a visit. Entrance from the shop downstairs (visited 11.07.2014).

Finally got to call in here after hearing about this place for so long, but sadly left disappointed. Went straight upstairs where the dining area was pretty cramped, full of tourists marvelling at the dusty stuffed animals and wooden beams.

They are the only selling point for this place. The staff are pretty clueless and kitchen looked filthy. I ordered a pie which never arrived. When I asked about it 30 mins later, I got baffled looks. Asked for a refund and got no apology.

I asked one member of staff if the ciders were local. She said no. I googled the ciders and they are produced about 20 mins North from York. If you donít know, fair enough but donít lie.

Sad to say but felt like a tourist trap. Beer room downstairs felt like walking into an oven too.

I studied for four months in York this past winter. Found Trembling Madness about half way through and it was by far my favourite bar in the city. I never ate there as it is rather small and couldnít get in once because there were too many people upstairs already. It is small but worth it. The options on tap regularly change. If in York it is well worth it to stop in

This is really two venues in one. The bottle shop downstairs is absolutely superb with a vast range of beers from the UK and around the world at reasonable(ish) prices, friendly service from the bloke on the till. The bar upstairs is pretty quirky although small and busy. Quite a small beer selection at the bar and itís not cheap although they have some very good stuff on. The food is amazing, we polished off two platters and a cheese board between three of us, but service was painfully slow; I donít think it should take the best part of an hour to put a few bits of meat, cheese and bread on a board and dish it up. Worth a visit, nontheless.

I only used the shop downstairs and after reading the reviews, regret not visiting the bar upstairs! I know iíll be back one day. The chap in the shop was pretty helpful. Great selection, particularly of Yorkshire beers (of course). Only issue for me was the fact that I bought approx 30 bottles and given that itís in a pedestrianised area, it was a massive trek back to the car!

Lovely building above The House of Trembling Madness bottle shop. We didnít realise that you could open your own from purchases downstairs and attempted to get served at the tight bar, not easy and there is a poor range when you get there. It is also difficult to get seated and it is not the type of bar to stand. All in all we were not that impressed.

To be fair it was swelteringly hot and crowded so hard to say it had ambiance, but the crowd was friendly and the place was into Beer. get some fresh air and the score would go up.

This could so easily be one of the best bars in the North of England. The beer selection in the bar is ok, but the fact the shop downstairs covers most bases, and can be taken into the bar, sorts that. The food is (barring the waiting times brought about by the lack of a proper kitchen) spot on. The surroundings are great. What lets it down is the lack of attention to detail. Food availability and service times change on every visit and the cask beer (on my last 3 visits) has been in poor condition. The trick is, cross your fingers, order a Yorkshire Rarebit (if theyíll serve you one) and let someone else drink the first few pints of cask...
