Iíve waited years for this visit. My wife joked that this was a pilgrimage! I found the place hard to get to, great! The staff were helpful and friendly. Our beers were quality, the shop had 12 and we bought 24 bottles. Gift shop was not well stocked but snack was tasty and plenty of parking. Well worth the detour if you can buy beer to take with you.

The mecca of beer lovers is a modern large cafe with a fairly utilitarian approach to decor. Situated as it is in the middle of nowhere it resembles a slightly upmarket service station cafe, but letís be honest no-one is here for the decor. Itís the beers. And thatís what really matters here. Three of the finest beers in the world served fresh and in immaculate condition. Whilst Iíve heard the service and ambiance can be horrific when a coach party turns up, it was quick and efficient when I went on a Monday at lunchtime. Didnít try the food but bought some cheese to go from the shop and it was decent, but not amazing. Itís the beers that are really the draw here, and anywhere that can serve 3 beers of this quality is going to do alright.

Cafť with some food and a total selection of three beers, Westvleteren 6, 8 and 12. Small shop that sells Trappist products, including beer if you are lucky. Had 6 packs of Westy 12 for sale my first visit (1 per costumer) none on the second. If they have beer stocked our not is up to the monks and impossible to know in advance.

Went there for a drink and some bottles .
Nice looking building on the outside , but hell inside . Like sardines , self-employed beer-connaiseurs from around the world gather and wait for 2 hours to get their hairy paws on what people told em is the best beer in the world ,.
Lines were 2 hours . Seatings where nowhere to be found
We walked away from this mass-touristic event . with about 100 liters of struise beers in the trunk , who needs westy anyways?

This is the holy pilgrimage for all beer nerds (in an only slightly sacrilegious way) that everyone needs to experience once, possibly more often if youíre going to pick up cases of beer. The original plan was to stay at the St Bernardus inn and rent bicycles from them to ride to Westvleteren, Struise, and a few other places, but it was dumping rain. Luckily we had a perfectly good Ford Focus diesel rental car with built in navigation. Upon arriving I learned that In de Vrede is a bit more modern than I had expected. They also have a bit more merchandise than I would guessed. They serve snacks and of course the three beers. You can drink all the Westvleteren beer you can handle here. Naturally we ordered one of each and tried them all side by side. I learned that they donít keg any of their beer, even for in house consumption. I also learned that they are not immune to infections. The blonde was funky. Seriously. It was actually quite delicious in itís off state but I have never had a Westvleteren Blond that tasted like that. The 12 fresh was too boozy and not ready to be consumed. The 8 was very good as was the blond. To be honest I enjoyed the rural small town setting as much as the cafť, despite the fact that it was after tourist season so everything (and I mean EVERYTHING) was under construction.
One more thing that I will add, as a point of pride (because I called it), that after having the whole St Bernardus and Westvleteren lineups in the same day, Abt walks all over Westvleteren 12. No contest. Admittedly the Westy 8 is better than the Prior 8, but in terms of the big bad quad that everyone wants, just drink the St Bernardus that you can get at your local (better) liquor store.

Having now been here 3 times I can say that this place doesnít have a ton to offer after the initial thrill of being there for the first time and the fact that you can ethically order and drink bottles at a relatively decent price. The building itself does resemble a cafeteria or truck stop as others have mentioned. The service is decent considering how busy they usually are. Itíd be nice to have more consistancy or notice of what (if any) six packs will be available in the shop, but it is what it is, and adds to the mystery of the experience. The food is good and suprisingly filling. It pairs well with the beer.
What really lacks here is anything unique that would make me want to go here without making an appointment at the drive through. I am sitting on plenty of Blonde, 8, and 12 at the house. Thereís no reason for me to go out of my way without some sort of special beer available or any of the beers on tap or a better ambiance.

We were there on a saterday and it was very busy. A lot of toerists. They have a great outside sit area. The prices are ok. So were the croques.

Nice place with a relaxed atmosphere (outside). The beer was served too cold, which is strange for a place like this.
