98 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 10/10 SELECTION 15/15 FOOD N/A VALUE N/A OVERALL 19/20 NickVega (29) Eugene, Oregon | August 17, 2007 (1997) Day 1 - Rent car in Brussels in AM, drive through Brugge as fast as possible, stop for lunch in Popperinge and enjoy a Hummel Ale, rush to Westvleteren for many afternoon goblets. This is a humble place to enjoy a great beer. Next to Kulminator this is my fondest memory in Belgium.
If you want to see a monastery and Monks on forklifts - go to Orval. | 96 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 10/10 SELECTION 15/15 FOOD 10/10 VALUE 10/10 OVERALL 20/20 beernoevil (48) Suwanee, Georgia | March 21, 2011 We were very hungover from attending the Zythos Bier Festival the night before but I had to give this place high marks. Ambiance was typical boring modern Europub. Service was great. I gave the beer selection the full score because where else in the world can you drink all 3 Westys without taking out a second mortgage on your house? We had the Carrot soup and a cheese plate and it was incredible. It’s a long way out of the way from anywhere else but so worth the trip if you enjoy the mystique of their beers.
You were allowed to buy 1 sixer to go and they only had the 8 available for sale when we were there. In addition to the 1 sixer you could also buy a gift pack w/ 1-12, 1-8 , 2 blonds and a glass. So between the 2 of us we left w/ a total of 2-12’s, 14-8’s and 4 blonds. | 96 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 15/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE 10/10 OVERALL 19/20 stevoj (52) Ramstein-Miesenbach, Germany | September 3, 2012 As this is the only place to get Westvelteren, the selection can’t be beat. Had the 12 with dinner, the 8 with dessert and finished with the blonde. Truly a day to be remembered... | 96 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 15/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE N/A OVERALL 20/20 Joeh (49) , England | September 1, 2004 Has the 3 wonderful beers and a good, limited food menu. The attached gift shop sells bottles of the 3 beers for take away. The prices aren’t quite as cheap as buying cases from the abbey, but the abbey doesn’t usually have the beers on sale all the time. Bottles of the 12 in the shop are €10.50 for 6. | 90 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD 9/10 VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 19/20 sdcourtney (13) Berlin, Germany, | April 9, 2013 Visited over Easter weekend, so couldn’t get the beer though the ’beer line’ and had to sample the three Westy’s here. Just had to stop by! Glad I came. | 90 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 15/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 18/20 Mathieu87 (84) Ganshoren, Belgium | April 13, 2011| Updated May 13, 2013 I had to give the maximum points to selection because they have all 3 Wesvleterens all the time, as much as you want ;)
Service is good, ambiance is chill and easy, people are there to enjoy their afternoon and their beer.
The food is really nice and goes really well with the beers.
Overall a 18/20, mostly because it’s thé Westvleteren pub, but also because it’s a nice place to be :) | 90 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 6/10 SELECTION 15/15 FOOD 9/10 VALUE 5/10 OVERALL 19/20 jkwood04 (43) Connecticut | June 11, 2010| Updated May 13, 2013 Ok maybe they only have 3 different, expensive bottles of beer here, but it’s Westvleteren 12 and 8. Worth every penny and every second it takes to get there. | 88 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 14/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 10/10 OVERALL 18/20 Glouglouburp (345) Montreal, Quebec | February 2, 2013| Updated May 13, 2013 A mandatory stop for any beer geek. And well worth it. In the middle of nowhere, far from anything noisy or busy, a very relaxing experience. A surprisingly large interior. I expected a smaller cozy place. The patio is large and great. This place is definitely a must-visit during a nice summer day. Sitting inside the pub is probably not so great. There are two main reasons to go there. The first one is to be able to taste fresh young Westvleterens. Like most non-belgian people I’ve never had a Westy that wasn’t at least 6 months old. Some say that aged is better. I now disagree. A fresh Westy 12 is surprisingly hoppy and totally awesome. The second reason to go there is the Westy ice-cream. Might very well be the best ice-cream I’ve ever had. The gift shop did not sell bottles to go when I was there. Supposedly this is often the case. Westys can be found elsewhere but be warned that you may not be able to buy cheap Westys at In de Verde. Call first if this is important for you. The sandwiches were good enough for a snack but nothing great. But did I mention the westy ice-cream? Yes I did. | 88 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 15/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE 10/10 OVERALL 18/20 hoppinionated (1) Toronto, Ontario | November 23, 2010| Updated May 13, 2013 After wandering through flooded Flanders fields on a very rainy morning in November, the restaurant was very welcome and the beer magnificent. I was driving so could only have one but what a one. | 88 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 17/20 fata2683 (131) Tucson, Arizona | June 26, 2011| Updated May 13, 2013 stopped in here after picking our crates up on 2 seperate trips. Where else can you order as much Westy are your heart can desire at a decent price? The food was pretty tasty as well. We had a cheese plate and croque monsieur. Nice little gift shop with glasses and occasionally more beer for sale. |
