J. Clyde had a great line up of beers when we visited - 35 to 40 taps in all - and we were particularly pleased to find Alabama’s 56 or so breweries strongly represented. Trim Tab brewery had opened in Birmingham just a few days earlier and J. Clyde had been serving five Trim Tab beers but only one was left . It was Pillar to Post, billed as a brown ale although it tasted more like a stout to me, and very good it was too! The J. Clyde bar is in a low, cottage like building tucked away in Cobb Lane, off the main drag of Five Points. It has rough stone and brick walls and tiffany lamps - very cosy and quite an individual sort of place. I liked it.

A nice English-style pub tucked off the main drag of downtown Birmingham. The exterior is rather unassuming and I missed the place the first time. There are a few tables outside, bar seating and tables inside. I arrived at opening on a Friday and was promptly served a set of four samples of my choosing. Since I had just eaten, I passed on anything here, though the menu certainly looked inviting. This was a good way to spend an hour sipping and contemplating brews.
Located off of side street/back alley. It’s not a big place and even with a bigger room in the back seats fill up quickly. They have about 50 taps with 30 fixed and 20 or so that rotate. They had a nice mix of local and national craft. Crowd skews a little younger thanks typical for a craft beer
Place skews younger because of its l proximity to UAB. Draft prices are high but that seems to be more to do with Alabama’s insanely high taxes on beer and liquor. Is this the best craft beer bar in Alabama? Probably.
Had dinner last night. On a small brick lined street. Had some tables outside and a decent sized bar. Gives off an old English castle/ cave feel to it. Tap list was extensive. Servers were knowledgeable and friendly but service seems a little on the slow side for being not overly busy. Food menu was adequate, I havd fish and chips which were pretty damn good. This place is awesome
The ambiance in general was pretty straightforward bar setting; nothing to creative, but it was way too dark. There was only one server running the entire room where we were sitting and he visited very infrequently and everything took a very long time. Their beer selection was about 6 pages long and quite varied with both bottles and taps, including Ola Dubh 40 year on cask - not bad! The food/value was pretty much average as well. We were there for dinner on a Sunday and only got the "pub" menu, basically burgers and appetizers that were somewhat high-priced but also innovative with offerings of sweet potato fries, fried green tomato burgers, fresh hummus, etc. Overall, a great place to go in Birmingham for beer, but everything else was about average.
Nice place. Unless I missed something though, I counted 43 taps (not 80 as listed here). All the taps were great selections though: Old Rasputin, Chimay white, 4-5 local brews, 10-12 regional micros, and other well-selected US micros and European imports. Three half-fridges stacked with good bottle selections as well. Cheese plate appetizer and pizza entree were very good. Pricing was surprisingly fair considering the monopoly they have on good beer in the state. Service was very friendly and knowledgeable at the bar, but a bit short-handed due to also servicing a Sweetwater beer-and-food pairing dinner on the patio that I would have loved to participate in!
Hands down the best beer place in Birmingham, and probably all of Alabama for that matter. Not much by way of ambiance, but they more than have the selection to make up for it. This place has the largest selection of ’under 6%’ selections I’ve seen in the state. The pub style food was pretty good (i recommend trying their sweet potato fries - extra crispy). The bartender sure did know her shit about the beers they carried. They also have a rotating ’mystery’ tap. The bartender told me that if you can figure out what the beer is, they’ll send you out to the GABF! Not sure if I believe that, but it is still a cool idea. They can’t wait till Alabama finally frees the hops, cause they already have a secondary bar that prepped and waiting to be filled with another 50 taps for what they want to theme as a ’belgian bar’ similar to the Thirsty Monk. Can’t wait.
Visited 2.5.16, quite late at night. Located in a brick house and the tap selection was great, good curation of many southern brews on tap, food menu that includes a vegan option or two. Good service. Definitely worth stopping by.
