Located in the small-town downtown of a college town (that’s 3 towns...), John’s Grocery is easy to miss driving through. A small corner shop with one small door and a faded sign. The store is about 1500 square feet (not that big), with about half of that area beer and half food and other quick-mart items. The selection of Belgians is amazing, with the best prices I’ve ever seen for Cantillon bottles. Singles of American micros are a bit harder to find... there are a few, but not many. Score points for the great glassware collection. I was able to find numerous european porters and stouts, as well as just about any Cantillon and Fantome you would want. The only think I can’t figure out is why Iowa City? There’s nothing else out here... but if you’re travelling through on I-80, don’t miss this place. As for the staff, to be honest I have to say that I didn’t enjoy them trying to hurry me out of the store after buying $90 worth of bottles. It would have helped if they could have given me a 750ml box to put my bottles in, rather than looking at me like I was going to hand carry all of my bottles out of the store. They also loose points for presentation, as all of the Belgian bottles were strewn about in wire cages, completely disorganized.

Mail order through pepsican. Amazingly secure packaging, excellent communication, fast shipping, and very fair prices. Would happily place another order.

Directly on the corner with parking in the back. Clean brick building with the inside divided into sections like it had additions added over time. Beer area had individual beers and six pack holders to select singles and a cooler with six packs and cases cold. I got a six of singles and a sampler 12 pack from an Iowa brewer. Nice selection of shirts, hats, beer glasses and other beer collectables. Well worth the visit if you are in Iowa City.

I’ve done a couple of mail orders through this place. Very easy to deal with, shipped with FedEx alcohol license. Requires adult signature just FYI. I usually use this store to get new JP releases that never make it to the east coast. Pepsiedcan is the point man and very helpful. Very cool establishment. For the record I’ve been to Iowa before, but not since my beer obsession.

Nice old school corner grocery store. Beer is in back corner. Nice selection of regional brews and some nice imports. Nice selection of glass but did not have the thistle that list on there website which was disapointing. Not accepting AMEX was a bitch. Overall nice selection with decent prices. Would stop back if in area.

Unparalleled beer selection for Iowa. The beer section is in the back and includes hundreds of warm bottles in addition to a bunch in the walk in cooler. I found some real gems here including three different Cantillons.

Stopped in on 4.19.2013. One of the very best beer stores I’ve been to. Crazy selection - tons of singles. Solid pricing and outstanding service. Not to mention a totally cool throw-back vibe. I’ll be back every time I’m in the area.

Wow! quite a little beer store here! Lots of IA beers, which is the main reason i came here. Mostly have CO and midwest beers outside of IA. beer cooler is tinny yet well stocked yet can be very crowded at times. Huge selection of belgians and germans here. a very interesting place with a cool history as well. If i am in iowa again i will stop for sure!

Tiny little corner grocery store half devoted to beer is reminiscent in some ways of a Montreal deppaneur...except that the tiny little space isn’t just filled with local micros, it’s also got an excellent selection of Belgians including some rarities (I saw Girardin black label here, in quantity, before I ever saw it anywhere else in the midwest). Prices are good, help is friendly though I didn’t find anyone who knew anything about beer. Obviously a labor of love that must get by on people visiting from a long ways off (like me).
