Ordered beer from them once through some bro named Andy. He hooked me up with a nice discount too. Very easy to work with, very prompt, and the pricing was pretty good (even if the beers I was ordering were really expensive beers). I got a mixed case of 3 Fonteinen (Doesjel and Scharbeekse Kriek). The selection at Johnís is really quite good and everyone should check them out. If I ever make it Iowa City Iíll have to stop in.

Located in the small-town downtown of a college town (thatís 3 towns...), Johnís Grocery is easy to miss driving through. A small corner shop with one small door and a faded sign. The store is about 1500 square feet (not that big), with about half of that area beer and half food and other quick-mart items. The selection of Belgians is amazing, with the best prices Iíve ever seen for Cantillon bottles. Singles of American micros are a bit harder to find... there are a few, but not many. Score points for the great glassware collection. I was able to find numerous european porters and stouts, as well as just about any Cantillon and Fantome you would want. The only think I canít figure out is why Iowa City? Thereís nothing else out here... but if youíre travelling through on I-80, donít miss this place. As for the staff, to be honest I have to say that I didnít enjoy them trying to hurry me out of the store after buying $90 worth of bottles. It would have helped if they could have given me a 750ml box to put my bottles in, rather than looking at me like I was going to hand carry all of my bottles out of the store. They also loose points for presentation, as all of the Belgian bottles were strewn about in wire cages, completely disorganized.

Mail order through pepsican. Amazingly secure packaging, excellent communication, fast shipping, and very fair prices. Would happily place another order.

It looks bad till you find the weird back room full of heavenly delights. A delight of strange and great beers from all over the world. I spent a ton and was only limited by space. Prices were great and service was friendly but not helpful. I could go there everyday for a month and be surprised. Also great vintages which I have never seen before.

I donít know if this is the biggest selection of beer in the states but itís certainly one of the most thoughtful and carefully curated. This place has been open in their current location since the 1940ís. Thankfully thereís parking behind the store. I saw their video on YouTube and was expecting a bigger place although it looks just the same. Given the small size of the space and the amount of stuff crammed in there, johns has the feel of a market in Manhattan. 800ís probably a conservative estimate. Iíd guess closer to 1000. They have a fantastic selection of Belgian and Scandanavian craft and very solid English, German, and American craft sections. They also have a separate room that has a pretty massive wall of beer glasses. The service was friendly and very helpful and the prices were far less than Iím used to. I think youíll find few bottle shops more complete than this one.

Iíve done a couple of mail orders through this place. Very easy to deal with, shipped with FedEx alcohol license. Requires adult signature just FYI. I usually use this store to get new JP releases that never make it to the east coast. Pepsiedcan is the point man and very helpful. Very cool establishment. For the record Iíve been to Iowa before, but not since my beer obsession.

Stopped in on 4.19.2013. One of the very best beer stores Iíve been to. Crazy selection - tons of singles. Solid pricing and outstanding service. Not to mention a totally cool throw-back vibe. Iíll be back every time Iím in the area.

Old review. Did a mailorder here about a year ago. Great selection to choose from (despite their online inventory not being completely up-to-date), helpful customer service and a very quickly-shipped and well-packed box of 12 beers sent over. Would definitely order here again.

Directly on the corner with parking in the back. Clean brick building with the inside divided into sections like it had additions added over time. Beer area had individual beers and six pack holders to select singles and a cooler with six packs and cases cold. I got a six of singles and a sampler 12 pack from an Iowa brewer. Nice selection of shirts, hats, beer glasses and other beer collectables. Well worth the visit if you are in Iowa City.

Stopped here just before midnight on the Friday night we rolled into town. Itís in downtown Iowa City by some other cool restaurants and shops and stuff. Itís a nice little market with tight aisles and goofball employees, and it has rooms off to the back for wine and then for beer. Such cool rooms. I snagged some goodies from Toppling Goliath, Exile, Central Waters, Crooked Stave (a 375 I hadnít seen before), and Lagunitas ($2.99 bombers of Equinox). I couldíve spent a lot more time and money here but Ms. phaleslu was almost passed out in the car and we had 12 hours of driving to do the next day, with limited trunk space. Good layout, given limited space. Good prices, too. The service here is A+ top-notch number one, with Andy (pepsican) leading the team of misfits who were around that night. I also grabbed some groceries while in there, and damn if they donít have an outstanding house-made wheat bread. It lasted our whole trip and gave us some high-quality peanut butter sandwiches, staying fresh and hearty for a week-plus. If I lived in Iowa City (sigh), Iíd be here every week. I loved everything about this place. Iíll be back whenever possible.
