Walk past the Doritos and Ramen noodles, and head straight to the back for probably the best selection of singles Iíve ever seen. You could spend an hour browsing in here and the only problem is making up your mind how many beers to get. Large walk-in for a huge variety of cold six packs (not just cases of domestics). Iíve found and tried out many highly rated beers from this site at Johnís. Would love to live within walking distance of here!

Iíve been buying most of my Iowa City beer at Dirty Johnís since I was in college at the U of Iowa. Itís a family operation now in its third generation--at least that Iíve seen at the counter. Although the beer room can get a bit crowded on a busy afternoon or evening, itís the place to go for the best beer selection Iíve seen in Iowa. The service is tremendous, and the advice is pretty good, too. And, you can pick up steaks for the grill on your way out.

Dirty Johnís has by far the best selection of beer in the area and the college-town / mom-and-pop grocer feel only improves the ambiance. The staff is very helpful and includes not only a selection of beer experts, but also a few dedicated souls to helping customers in search of a good bottle of wine.

Stopped in on 4.19.2013. One of the very best beer stores Iíve been to. Crazy selection - tons of singles. Solid pricing and outstanding service. Not to mention a totally cool throw-back vibe. Iíll be back every time Iím in the area.

I donít know if this is the biggest selection of beer in the states but itís certainly one of the most thoughtful and carefully curated. This place has been open in their current location since the 1940ís. Thankfully thereís parking behind the store. I saw their video on YouTube and was expecting a bigger place although it looks just the same. Given the small size of the space and the amount of stuff crammed in there, johns has the feel of a market in Manhattan. 800ís probably a conservative estimate. Iíd guess closer to 1000. They have a fantastic selection of Belgian and Scandanavian craft and very solid English, German, and American craft sections. They also have a separate room that has a pretty massive wall of beer glasses. The service was friendly and very helpful and the prices were far less than Iím used to. I think youíll find few bottle shops more complete than this one.

Unparalleled beer selection for Iowa. The beer section is in the back and includes hundreds of warm bottles in addition to a bunch in the walk in cooler. I found some real gems here including three different Cantillons.

Johnís is a great beer store, as well as being a great place to buy wine. They know their stuff, have a ridiculous selection and knowledge of Belgians and can match you to something youíll like. A must stop for any beer enthusiast coming through Iowa.

When you walk in it is a traditional mom & pop style local grocery store. Really good selection of beer (as well as wine and other liquors). As far as beer goes, there is a very good selection of Belgian beers, along with a decent selection of German and British beers. Some nice vintages (especially of J. W. Lees Harvest, í99 to present and various selections of barrel aged ones). Also a good selection of American beers (at least for ones available in Iowa it is very good). There is a large walk in cooler area full of American beers. The back of that cooler has different Macro selections though. They also have a Johnís Mystery pack of 24 beers for $20. It has some random beers, donít expect anything great but you get your moneys worth.
The people that work the beer department are pretty knowledgeable about beer and make good recommendations. Fun to talk to about beer and as long as they donít need to help someone, they are more than happy to talk beer with you.
The quality is good and they try to keep the beers as fresh as possible. They do what is possible to maintain there beer in ideal conditions.
Price is about what you would expect. Sometimes they have some nice sales on some decent things. Average price and it is normal to lower price for what you would expect in Iowa.
They now also own the place next door to the actual grocery store to hold their massive selection of glassware. Pretty good prices and a number of different glasses. You also get a free glass if you purchase $100 worth of beer (which you easily could do).
A great beer store, and one of the best or the best in Iowa. Really good selection for Iowa, really helpful and nice employees with a good price and quality. If you are in Iowa City or around the area check this place out. Highly recommend, especially given that it is a mom & pop style store that is great to support.
Also RIP John Alberhasky, I thought this would be a good day to express how much I appreciate your store. In Heaven there is now beer.
