Best selection and customer service ever experienced. Employees go out of their way to help you out in every way. Absolute experts on beer. Sent girlfriend in there with beer list and they took care of the rest. Awesome awesome place.

Walk past the Doritos and Ramen noodles, and head straight to the back for probably the best selection of singles I’ve ever seen. You could spend an hour browsing in here and the only problem is making up your mind how many beers to get. Large walk-in for a huge variety of cold six packs (not just cases of domestics). I’ve found and tried out many highly rated beers from this site at John’s. Would love to live within walking distance of here!

I’ve been buying most of my Iowa City beer at Dirty John’s since I was in college at the U of Iowa. It’s a family operation now in its third generation--at least that I’ve seen at the counter. Although the beer room can get a bit crowded on a busy afternoon or evening, it’s the place to go for the best beer selection I’ve seen in Iowa. The service is tremendous, and the advice is pretty good, too. And, you can pick up steaks for the grill on your way out.

Dirty John’s has by far the best selection of beer in the area and the college-town / mom-and-pop grocer feel only improves the ambiance. The staff is very helpful and includes not only a selection of beer experts, but also a few dedicated souls to helping customers in search of a good bottle of wine.

Stopped in on 4.19.2013. One of the very best beer stores I’ve been to. Crazy selection - tons of singles. Solid pricing and outstanding service. Not to mention a totally cool throw-back vibe. I’ll be back every time I’m in the area.

Unparalleled beer selection for Iowa. The beer section is in the back and includes hundreds of warm bottles in addition to a bunch in the walk in cooler. I found some real gems here including three different Cantillons.

John’s is a great beer store, as well as being a great place to buy wine. They know their stuff, have a ridiculous selection and knowledge of Belgians and can match you to something you’ll like. A must stop for any beer enthusiast coming through Iowa.

When you walk in it is a traditional mom & pop style local grocery store. Really good selection of beer (as well as wine and other liquors). As far as beer goes, there is a very good selection of Belgian beers, along with a decent selection of German and British beers. Some nice vintages (especially of J. W. Lees Harvest, ’99 to present and various selections of barrel aged ones). Also a good selection of American beers (at least for ones available in Iowa it is very good). There is a large walk in cooler area full of American beers. The back of that cooler has different Macro selections though. They also have a John’s Mystery pack of 24 beers for $20. It has some random beers, don’t expect anything great but you get your moneys worth. The people that work the beer department are pretty knowledgeable about beer and make good recommendations. Fun to talk to about beer and as long as they don’t need to help someone, they are more than happy to talk beer with you. The quality is good and they try to keep the beers as fresh as possible. They do what is possible to maintain there beer in ideal conditions. Price is about what you would expect. Sometimes they have some nice sales on some decent things. Average price and it is normal to lower price for what you would expect in Iowa. They now also own the place next door to the actual grocery store to hold their massive selection of glassware. Pretty good prices and a number of different glasses. You also get a free glass if you purchase $100 worth of beer (which you easily could do). A great beer store, and one of the best or the best in Iowa. Really good selection for Iowa, really helpful and nice employees with a good price and quality. If you are in Iowa City or around the area check this place out. Highly recommend, especially given that it is a mom & pop style store that is great to support. Also RIP John Alberhasky, I thought this would be a good day to express how much I appreciate your store. In Heaven there is now beer.

This is one of the Mother Ships. Dirty John’s is legendary. I don’t know why this is not labelled as "ESSENTIAL." Plan to spend lots of money here. The staff knows their stuff, but are never a**holes about it.

John’s is a must for anyone traveling along I-80 in Iowa. It’s about 10 minutes from the interstate, and WELL worth the time. It’s a small-ish corner grocery store. The beer staff is on the ball with what they carry, and with what’s available to them. The shelves are usually pretty well stocked, and they keep fresh stuff on hand, most of the time. The selection of imports is second to none in this part of the country, and they’ve recently started carrying Thomas Hardy, going back several years. There is also a sizable walk in cooler with quite a few craft bottle selections. Ask to be taken into the "glass house" for a world class glassware selection. Both branded and unbranded glass of all types, and some decent breweriana as well. Side note - known as "Dirty John’s" for selling underage kids Playboy back in the late 50’s.
