Doesnít look like much on the outside, which continues on into the inside. Lots of beer, lots of variety and not really organized. One of those places you need lots of time in. Big and unique European selection and some stuff that would be considered hard to find. Helpful in a gruff manner and pricing is pretty decent. A good stop if you want obscure Euro stuff.

Visited on 26/05/13 in the evening.
Ramshackle bottle shop perhaps 5 miles from downtown.
Has a dive bar kind of feel to it, pretty spartan shelving and decor, beers kind of organised by European country vs US but also a disorganised feel to it.
Good European selection, which didnít interest me but worth noting.
Some beers in fridges but largely on shelving.
Nice stop but if youíre time is limited I would hit the likes of Belmont and Beermongers first up.

Love this place. One of the best bottle shops I have ever been to. Great selection, great prices, and the best cheap burger in town!

This place is a bit divey, but has an amazing selection of beer. They have some really cool hard-to-find beer, as well as a great selection of local options and the mainstays youíd expect on the west coast. There are quite a few vintage bottles around if you know where to look, and youíll definitely be quite happy. Store is organized roughly by region (as opposed to style), so youíll find breweries grouped together. Awesome place to stop when driving through Portland, as itís not far off the freeway.

Iíve visited Johnís Marketplace a few times over the years whenever Iím in town. Since the last time I visited theyíve let the beer and wine take over more of the store. The grocery section: gone. They have more beer in refrigeration, good. Their international selection is incredible. Lots of Belgians to choose from, lots of Oregon and California. Go get lost in the aisles of beer.

Used to come here back in the middle to late 2000 when you could find old bottles of stuff like Fantome and Cantillon on the shelf regularly. Those days are gone and these days you find old beer on the shelf and usually stuff that shouldnít be like Pilsner or IPA. These days with other top quality bottle shops in town, not worth the drive out from downtown IMO.

A pretty weird spot with a massive selection. The prices are pretty good but Iíd be wary of freshness here. The staff are knowledgeable but pretty creepy. Much like the building itself. Didnít eat or anything.

The place looks like a crappy little super market, but it has one of the best beer selections weíve ever seen. Decent prices, and a mind numbing variety to choose from. We <3 Johnís.

Johnís marketplace is basically an oversized, brightly lit if a bit run-down convenience store. If Bottleworks is Seattleís version of Belmont Station, North Star Beer Market is Seattleís version of Johns Marketplace. Cases and cases of west coast options, some hard to find. A much bigger selection of Belgians than Iíve seen elsewhere in Portland. You get the sense that by hunting through the dusty back shelves you might find some interesting rarities -- but itís not clear how appropriate the conditions would have been for aging over time.
