When I fist visited the Johnstown Brewing Co. It was in the early stages of development. I have been very fortunate to see it progress into a very fine establishment. I have always enjoyed micro brews and was glad to finally see one in my back yard! I was met with a smile and was offered samples of various beers. I fell in love with the Stone bridge Brown Ale right away and drink it on a regular basis. The food is as good as the beer! Generous portions with a touch of class unlike any other place in this town. I have been all over looking for a place like this and now I have found it. This is worth the drive from anywhere as I have met people from all over the world! There is a beer to please everyone out there. This is a gem!

Well, the food isnít bad but itís not as good as they advertise it to be. The head brewer is a Bucknell ChemE grad and we chatted for a bit when I interviewed him for the article. He said at that point that he wanted to make some changes and get into brewing some more challenging beers. The flawed beers have been mostly cleaned up, but the last time I was there they were still nothing special. I admit the building and grounds has a soft spot in my heart as the grounds of the former Bethlehem Steel Management Club, and site of many a Sunday brunch where I would stuff myself to the brim with Eggs Benedict....oh I love Eggs Benedict....what was I talking about? Oh yes, the brewpub. Itís worth a stop. I wonder if they still have Eggs Benedict at the Sunday Brunch....

Visited here on a Tuesday afternoon around 2pm - place was all be deserted, which was nice for quietly rating their 8-beer sampler ($5). Great service and Barrett, the brewer, came up to talk to me for a while. Laid back establishment with nice view outside. Beers were average, and the house character seemed to be a tad salty with notes of brewed tea in many of the beers. The IPA and stout were the best offerings. Worth a stop in if you ever happen to be here, and I hope to return to try their food.

Why is the slogan, "Sure we have great beer but itís all about the food"? Its a brewpub, hence "Its all about the beer". i guess itís a good thing that it isnít all about the beer because the beer isnít very good. But the atmosphere and food are OK and the staff is friendly.

First off check out the wonderful article Probiere wrote about this place. The ambiance was very nice, stone and woodwork, with lots of old steel mill paraphanalia around. Service was good but not inspired. Management was very attentive. The beer really is not the strength of this place. It is tolerable, but on the low end for a microbrewery in PA. The menu was huge and varied. Wonderful selection. The steaks were lean and very tender. They had by far the best crab cakes I have ever seen in PA. When they advertise no filler in the crabcakes they really mean it! The food and atmosphere will have me going there plenty of times I am sure, now if only the beer can evolve to match the food...
