Am I the odd man out with this biercafe? I guess I did not think it was all that special. The beer list was decent - wide selection, but more things can be found elsewhere (though I missed the Drie Fonteinen Framboos... found it in Brussels a few days later, so no big deal). The setting is decent enough, nice wood and brick interior and a very nice patio in the back. Server was rather impersonal. Went here first thing to start the day, which was a bad idea since it’s a bit of a walk from central Gent and we were hoping for breakfast/lunch. Doh! Should have read the reviews... they only had pub cheese available, no soup or food otherwise.

Absolutely gorgeous garden in the back, a safe haven from the bustle of the city, within the city. The beer list is simply wonderful and was full of surprises (Drie Fonteinen Framboos, Cantillon Framboos, Drie Fonteinen Millenium, etc.). Everything here wanted me to come back and I shall make sure I return in the near future. Simply stunning. Period.

A small antechamber with a larger room, and terrasse, like a wooded medieval bar. A nice menu of beers, by province with good prices. Full, restaurant service, with cheaper prices than the center (2 euros cheaper for Carbonnade or Waterzooi). A nice relaxing place. Visited November 2006.

A beer central. Yet it seems more of a restaurant than a beer bar. You will find beers here. Uncommon beers. But uncommon great beers are not likely. But the food is good, and in combination of food and beer this is a good place. Garden area is quite nice.

This was a great place, wish I’d have made it here more than just the once but the distance fromn the centre of town and the fact that it rained pretty much incessantly for the entire duration of out trip put paid to this option. The barman was really friendly efficient and most helpful, best of all was service with a smile. This was a really nice place to sit and drink, it felt like and was to all intents and purposes a little backstreet local as it was two thirds of the way down a small terraced street. Great selection of beers quite strong on Lambics and Trappists I had a Lambic but Barry a friend had the Westvleteren 12 and at 8 Euros a pop this wasn’t too badly priced. Would say this was one of my favourite pubs in town.

Very very cool pub a bit outside Gent tourist area. Very warm interior full of heavy woods. Does not sit many people inside but thankfully there’s the patio in the back. And what a patio!!! Unreal!!! One of the nicest patio ever, like a mini jungle or something. Official beer list is about 200 bottles but that doesn’t mean much since it is not up to date. I got myself a the Drie Fonteinen Framboos (yes there still had it sept 2006). Very friendly a knowledgeable staff. Didn’t try the food, don’t even know if they serve meals. Certainly in my top 5 Belgium pub. A must.

Has had a recent sprucing up, which does not seem to be fully complete as a couple of the rooms were not open. This meant it was very crowded and our party of 8 could not get seated together. The service was a little hassled on this visit - they seemed short handed to me. Despite the redecoration, the place doesn’t seem to have changed too much although the amibiance is more like a restaurant now than a drinking joint. The beer list is fairly strong - maybe 150 beers - but there was nothing particularly rare on offer. Food remains top notch - the Ribs A Volonte (as much/many as you can eat) were excellent. When I first came here years ago, with less Belgian experience under my belt, I was totally blown away. I’m less easily excited these days but it remains a super place and one that I always return to when in Gent. The Hoppetje house beer is just a rebadge of Val-Dieu Blonde by the way.

Like everyone else it seems, we had an adventure finding this place on foot. Well worth the trouble. Cozy place that nevertheless has plenty of tables. Old pub, lots of breweriana on the walls. Fire going in the corner. Pretty good selection, with solid regionals and serious lambics. Enjoyed some of the best carbonnade I’ve had in Belgium... and I’ve had a lot of it. Perfect with an Oerbier. Looking forward to another visit.

Like others I was confused when I first arrived, I thought for sure I was going to open up the door into someones home, but it actually turns out to be a much larger bar than anticipated from the outside. A bit dark, but with plenty of nice dark wood throughout. Bar staff is a bit quiet and gruff during an early evening visit but efficient. Radio selection lacks the character of the music found elsewhere. Beer list is not bad, but is not particularly exciting. Perhaps I have been desensitized after a week in Belgium but theres little here that I have not seen on many other lists. Overall I am left with the impression that Hop Duvel is better suited as a watering hole where you enjoy a number of beers in a group of people over the course of the evening rather than the quieter sampling I was there for.

One of the two places you cannot miss when in Gent. I was there in summer so the beer garden was in full swing - what a place. Food is really good (I had the waterzooi), service is great and the beerlist is good without being great, except for Drie Fonteinen Framboos!!!! It’s worth going for that beer alone, but this place has a lot of other attractions.
