Bumped into this place while ambling around San Diego and sat half outside in the entrance lobby. Inside looked neat, tidy and beery, my wife and i wanted the fresh air though. The young lady who served us was happy to bring us out just beers and even gave me two free samples when she saw I was taking notes. I like free beer! So overall a good place to rest your feet and try some of their beers, all seven I tried seemed in good order and tasted fine to me.

This brewpub has a cozy, inviting feel to it. Maybe a bit much on the wood panel theme, but the layout is beautiful and the staff is friendly. They keep a decent selection of Karl Strauss beers on tap, but nothing too exciting (maybe Iím just bitter that I missed out on the 25th anniversary doppel). Itís a shame that they only do tasters in the form of a fixed flight, but they are kind enough to provide a small sample of any beer they have on tap. The food was pretty darned good, too.

First stop off the flight. Walked in 2pm Wednesday and had 2 flights and a 2 pints between us. Service was excellent as was the atmosphere. Beautiful outdoor sitting area and a cool indoor area as well. Not cheap, but certainly a good stop.

A good spot. Quite commercially-minded though they make pretty decent beers overall. Friendly staff, good value on the flights. They have a full food menu so this might be a good spot to for a full meal (many of the other downtown SD brewpubs donít have a lot of food) although I wasnít eating during my visit. The location is convenient as it is very near the main train station. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the downtown area.

What happened? I know I rated this once before. Hmm. Anyway, I stopped in here with some friends on a brewery hopping tour through SD. Actually we were mostly doing north county but a pilot friend was staying downtown over night between flights. This was my first time in down town in a number of years and I had forgotten how nice it is right on the water. Then you step inside and itís a dark bar with some bar flies. Actually itís not that bad but it would have been nice to sit outside. Of the flight the Downtown After Dark (DAD) was the most popular with the other two but I liked the barleywine the best. One of these days Iíll have to stop back when in the area to see whatís new but I wouldnít make the trip down from LA for this. Actually I wouldnít make an appreciable trip for this but it is in downtown so itís an easy stop if youíre already in the area. Prices are high on food, they have a number of beers on tap but many of them are the corporate recipes (with one or two unique ones), and the service was good.

Food is great, I had the Oktoberfest in the 1Liter Strauss Oktoberfest souvenir mug, very tasty, clean taste smooth finish, not filling, just the right amount of alcohol very similar to the real Munich beer

Itís one of the few breweries located in the city centre of San Diego. We have come here since 2006 almost every year. Karl Strauss is one of the pioneers in the SD beer scene. We like the Red Trolley ale they sometimes have it even on cask. Thursday is cask night. Food is very good too and during summer we like to sit in the small beer garden. Overall one of our favorite places in SD.

Ambiance: Typical mid-range brew-pub interior, with some nice views of brewing vessels, etc; decent patio out front. Service: Friendly, attentive, timely, seemed relatively knowledgeable about the beers. Selection: 10-15 house-made beers, most on tap but some only available in 22 oz bombers. Food: Dinner was great. I had a ridiculously awesome mac and cheese (with HUGE chunks of bacon and ham, and a delicious panko crust), my colleague had a massive burger he really enjoyed. Value: A taddish pricey, but comparable to a Ruby Tuesday or Outback. Two entrees, plus a flight of samples (4x3 oz), plus four total full-size beers = $60. Overall: Every single beer I tried was at least good, a couple were excellent. The food was great. On a weekday evening, it wasnít crowded and the neighborhood is decent. If youíre in town on business, especially if your from the East Coast, get in there and try it.
