64 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 10/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 10/20 Clembo1957 (37) Smethwick, England | May 3, 2013 Good freindly community pub, an easy walk from the station. Two rooms and plenty of character. A bit shabby but a refurb would probably leave it soulless. A good range of Harvey’s beers, if you don’t like Harvey’s don’t bother. | 60 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 6/10 SELECTION 8/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 13/20 Fin (368) Merton, Oxfordshire, England, England | November 25, 2012 We popped in here on Saturday 17th November 2012. It is a slightly tired, dark, pub however to be fair Arsenal were playing Tottenham and they had it on the TV in the bar off to the left so maybe curtains were drawn as well adding to the gloominess. We went to the bar off to the right which seemed to link onto a further room stretching some considerable way back. The beers were from the Harveys range, both of those that we had (forgotten the names) were fine if somewhat unexciting. The service and general atmosphere was similar, fine, reasonably friendly but also a bit functional. I just felt that the place needs a bit of spark, maybe a sympathetic re-fit, it could and should do very well but it gives the air of being just satisfied with its lot and resistant to change. Fine enough but I guess you could pick 10-15 pubs in Brighton that are much better than this without any effort at all. | 66 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 6/10 SELECTION 10/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 6/10 OVERALL 14/20 jmdt83 (4) Brighton, England | June 26, 2012 A cosy old fashioned pub with a good selection of Ales and almost always a good Dark on. Classic Football and cricket memorabilia adorn the walls which make for interesting reading. The back room is large and great for a gathering and there is also a nice smoking area out the back. | 66 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 8/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 14/20 Travlr (999) Washington, Washington DC | January 6, 2012| Updated March 13, 2013 Slightly scruffy place near the station with lots of character. Decent cider on handpump, plus pretty much all the Harvey’s stuff you could want. Visited on quiz night (Tuesday), but didn’t partake. | 58 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 5/10 SELECTION 8/15 FOOD N/A VALUE N/A OVERALL 13/20 Mad_Ferret (12) , Sweden | August 8, 2011| Updated March 13, 2013 Haha, what a joint. I went in for a pint just to chek it out after visiting trafalgar Wines since its very close. I couldnt first make out if it was open or not, but when I pushed a door it opened and...voila!
Two small shabby rooms with a bar between them. Very old and dodgy like you would fantasize such an old workingmans bar to be.
When I asked about their beers the young girl in the bar said "we’re a Harveys bar" and then didnt really seem too sure about which beers they had on bottle and so. She even pointed to a shelf with old dusty vintage bottles when I asked about their bottled beers.
A bunch of "men" sat at the bar and watched a cricket match on a projector screen and suddenly one guy farted really loud. The other guys yelled at him. "We heard that James! Thats disgusting!" Hahaha, classy. | 70 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 8/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 16/20 Leighton (389) London, England | February 21, 2011 Visited here during the weekend of the Brighton Half Marathon. The selection is alright, five or so Harveys ales and a handful of other stuff. The condition of the beers was decent. The setting is quite cozy with a pretty nice, wrap-around bar and a selection of large, kitchen tables as well as smaller tables. There’s also a TV. No real qualms. When one conjures up an image of a British Pub I think they approximate a place like this. Not the best pub in Brighton, but worth checking out I suppose. | 42 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 2/10 SELECTION 9/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 6/20 puzzl (123) New York, New York | June 2, 2010 Hard to recommend a place where a female server came up to my wife, asked her what she was doing, then literally laughed in her face when she said she was knitting. Awesome service, there. She then went and laughingly told another server and pointed at us... stupid bitch. Thankfully he was not as classless as his colleague and just shrugged. | 70 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 10/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 14/20 lada66 (131) Savonlinna, Finland | March 25, 2009 Four real ales and two ciders on tap. Harvey´s ales. An intimate place but very nice and cozy. Four rooms and terrace. Sport pictures on the wall (22.10.08). | 46 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 5/10 SELECTION 5/15 FOOD N/A VALUE N/A OVERALL 10/20 Gethinbeer (107) Musky, Nova Scotia | May 17, 2007 Not a pub to go out of your way to find. A few selection of ales available. But good local brews, also maybe one rare ale on. The place itself is a little shabby but has character. Mix of locals and student types. Nice atmosphere. | 68 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 7/15 FOOD N/A VALUE N/A OVERALL 15/20 detroitsteel (21) , England | January 30, 2007| Updated February 7, 2007 My friend Will always drags me in here for a pint when we come down from London. Its close to the station, but more than that, its a proper boozer, the type of which are rare these days. No bare pine or stainless steel furniture, no bulk bought curio’s on the wall. Its a little frayed around the edges, a little dingy, but it has character, and is very ’Brighton’. The football results where on a big screen, flyers for local gigs and club nights on the rickity tables, and a smattering of ’local’ types rolling fags and reading papers. The beer selection isn’t that broad - not much in the way of bottles but several of Harvey’s ales from the cask. I can’t remember the one I had when I was in last (nov 06) but it was well kept, and 3 pints later we went our way to meet up with some mates at a souless drinking barn near the front. Not a destination pub, but if your in town worth a visit. |
