this place is right in the bowery, which is a little out-of-the-way from my usual haunts. when youíre strolling through the bowery, you will notice that PUNKíS NOT DEAD! holy mowhawk, there are people who live the NY scum/UK punk scene like it never stopped. I wonder if theyíve been doing this since the 70s. aside from the time warp in the neigborhood, this is a nice unique Kraut joint. wish they would play some Prog Krautrock music - maybe that would get the punks to clean it up a little. but really now, the clientelle here are normal hipsters, even though the place was pretty dead on a late saturday afternoon. cute chickie with ink & hardware served me up a nice Schwarzbier at the front bar, nobody was at the restaurant part. a few were in the back garden. might be bad timing but the place could use a shot in the arm.

Cool, another German place. We need more of those, but we need good ones. Actually, what we really need are three things: 1) more knowledge and availability of good hefes, and I donít mean bitter lemon flavored garbage wheat ale, 2) more Vitus, and 3) more bratwurst. Also, the communal tables and outdoor seating are pretty nice. Now, this place, while popular and busy, didnít have much of a weizenbier selection. The sausage was good naturally (hard to mess that up if youíre not grinding your own) but the beer selection left a bit to be desired. Also, despite the outdoor area in the back being nothing but shared picnic tables itís not self seating. If you close your tab at the bar and decide you want to sit down a hostess can seat you. People are sociable if force them to, so grab a half liter and go sit with a group of people and youíll have a good time. There arenít a ton of German bierhalle options so this is better than nothing but itís not great.

Decent German beer selection. Has a nice little garden out in the back which is nice in the summertime. My choice of food (the spaetzle) was not very impressive. Overall Iíve been three times and not terribly impressed with this place. I find there are better German bars/restaurants in the city.

Have visited a couple of times with a German friend who comes here for a homeland fix when sheís in Manhattan.
Decent German selection and the food is as good as Iíve had outside of Deutschland.
Service suffered a little as the place got busy the last time we were in (a Friday evening) and the crowd was largely young student/frat types who were pretty noisy.
Great place if you want a German fix, I personally wouldnít come here if it wasnít for my friend, but thatís not to say it isnít a decent venue for what it offers.

Great biergarten in back. Friendly service. Moderate but nice selection of German beers. Food was great - try the goulasch and spaetzle.

Decent german selection, good neighborhood, better during the daytime before the crowds from uptown arrive. I like the small front-bar room better than the dining or outside.

Beer garden wasnít open on this chilly day but its nice to know itís there for future reference. Bar was a bit more appealing than back room which was on the small side for a íbiergartení type place. Was loud but mostly due to one larger group (my guess large groups may not be an infrequent occurence). Beer list was good but not great when it came to German suds. Food was better than average for a íbeer jointí. Prices werenít great given LES location. Still a nice feel overall

Come early if you want a seat outside in the tightly packed, cafeteria style seating in their pack porch. At 4:30 PM on a Saturday, I had the last spot for two. Fun atmosphere and the service is very good. $14 liter steins of a choice of 10 import beers. A fun spot indeed.

Decent food, fair beer selection. Not a bad place for a few drinks on the Lower East Side. Cons: Price - $9 for a bottle is a little pricey.

Nice clean bar. 12 taps. Great German Selection(not a selection you see often). I didnít see a bottle list but what I saw in the fridge looked impressive. Simple bar area with windows opened to the street. Beer garden in back. Food looked authenitc. Beers were awesome. Great proximity to New Beer and Whole Foods. Definitely worth the stop.

Nice looking bar, with some tables in the hallway leading to the back room, which connects to the outdoor garden. The garden is tented in, with a nice amount of seating. The inside is comfortable with nice blonde wooden tables. Beers were all german, with about 12 on tap. We had a nice lunch there, and the food was very good.
