Long running basement bar in central Kanda. 5 taps of japanese craft, decent rotation, served in 2 sizes, average prices. Barman is very friendly and the local crowd is often quite talkative too. Not really a beergeek place but it would be a great dive bar if it was not that heavily smokey.

Last stop on a pub crawl with TimE and Tim. Interesting divey basement bar atmosphere and a quirky bartender. Around a handful of Japanese crafts on draft plus a hand pump. No English but TimE handled the ordering. Okay prices.

Quirkly little dive bar in Kanda. Small, kind of dirty, but good condition beers and friendly owner (no English). If the tap list is rocking this a fun little stop.

Introduced to me by TimE. Basement bar, smokey with Japanese clientele. At 11.30pm on a sat night it was fairly quiet. House beer was not on cask as previously so the Minoh Stout was keg and not great condition. Other beers were good though. Will have to go back for a proper appraisal. Would also like to try out a few of the bottle selections.

A friendly little joint in smoke filled basement. The beer selection isnít wide, but itís nearly always quality. Itís spartan interior meant I knew what I was there for and so did the owner- beer. The biggest drawback is that it fills with smoke pretty quickly and can make enjoying a pint difficult at times. Great place, though. Will drink many a pint at Maltan.

Dark, smoky basement joint. Funky interior. Good beers--not a whole lot on tap, but a few and they were decent. House beer was a real ale coffee stout from Minoh, which was very nice indeed.

Cool little place in a basement with no windows. Reminded me of a Japanese version of Stumbling Monk in Seattle, because of its size, prices and late hours. We got there abuot 1130 on a Friday and this place was packed. Lots of young afterwork businessmen hanging out, mixed with a hand full of beer geeks. Its dark and smokey, but lively and has no pretenion at all. Almost has a feel of a blue collar pub in that regard. Everyone seems to know or wants talk to everyone else, including us. Very friendly customers. 5 taps, including an amazing stout on hand pump specially made by Minoh just for Maltan. Plus about 20 bottles from Minoh, Hitachino and Sankt Gallen, with Minohís IIPA going for only 850yen/bottle! This isnít a beer geeks beer bar, so nothing really new or unusual except the awesome house beer, but atmosphere more than makes up for it.
