I used to work in Southwark Street in the sixties. Then there were still areas undeveloped after World War bombing. Today the district is utterly unrecognisable. The Market Porter probably hasnít changed much, except for the noisy city boys in suits. And Iím pretty sure the selection of beer is better nowadays.

Bustling pub, everytime I have been there it has been busy. Plenty of cask ales to choose from (approx 15), and mostly in good nick as well.

Typical English pub at its best. Wood and bricks. Authentic feeling. Locals and tourists. Beer selection is about 8 interesting casks and about that much boring taps (but only casks really matters when it comes to judging beer selection in England). The type of pub that stimulates lively conversations, loud despite the low music volume. I canít comment about the food but I wouldnít eat there at a busy time of day. Probably the best cask selection in the Southwark area and one of the best in the entire London.

A down to earth pub, in the middle of the increasingly trendy Borough Market. It is Londonís real ale pub par excellence, with an unrivalled choice as well as fast efficient staff. A very slick operation that understands its market and gives them what they want. Top class.

An excellent, often jam packed little pub I had the pleasure of meeting SilkTork at late on a Tuesday evening. Handpumps-a-plenty behind the bar with a constantly changing selection of Britainís finest real ales. The place was crowded and had spewed out onto the street, which I guess is its beer garden. Ales were in tip-top condition all served at just the right temperature and you could spend a week just sampling them. Raucous, friendly and various crowds, from suits to janitors all with open minds and a thirst for good ale. A great pub.

A great bar, located right across from the Borough Market (with the Utobeer store), it opened at 12pm the day I visited. Inside itís a series of wooden tables on wooden floors, with a bar that reaches around the bottom floor, showing off a good selection of cask ale and a few CO2 taps as well. Upstairs is the restaurant, where I had some onion soup with bread as I sat right up near an open window and people-watched the market right across the street. Canít really put a number on the selection since Iím not a local, but the beer we had that day was of fairly high quality, in my opinion. Good bar, no more than 1/2 block from the tube. This is a place I would visit again. Show up early or you might not find a place to sir downstairs.

Pretty much the best pub in London for range of cask ales - 10 handpumps (although 2 seem to be permanently given over to Harveys best) plus some Meantime beers on tap and more mundane keg and bottle offerings. The biggest problem here is the crowds (hence marked down on ambience) - its usually packed solid, although on a sunny day (like today) drinkers sometimes prefer to spill outside, leaving more room inside. Staff are generally efficient but few have much beer knowledge, which is a bit of a drawback in a specialist beer pub (although a relatively small proportion of the customers are beer geeks). Iíve never eaten here. The opening time seems variable - the Good Beer Guide says 11am, its listed here as 11.30 but it didnít actually open until 12 when we visited today. Donít forget the market and the Utobeer stall (if youíre there on the right day) over the road.

Nearest the Borough Market, in the beautiful Southwark zone. Enough crowded with some secluded angle. Numerous unusual and particular beers, a lot over the average of the other locals. Decidedly elevated the number of cask beees available. Essential furnishing and much typical of british style pub.
