I have meant to write a review of Mekong since I first got on this site but kept forgetting to do so. First, the food is delicious and inexpensive. The beer selection, the comraderie and Anís events make this the go to bar in Richmond. If you are there on your birthday there is a good chance you will end up "konged" as An likes to serve up a goldfish bowl of beer to celebrate. There are often beers available at Mekong that otherwise would not make it into Virginia and it is the site of the monthly James River Homebrewers club meetings. When Mekong was voted best craft bar in the US, they celebrated by selling all of their drafts for a dollar. If you are within 100 miles of this place, you need to make a stop here! Mekong is for beer lovers.
Mecca for beer lovers. The food is out of this world, the beers (13 taps, with a few changes a night---you might sample 16-18 rare craft drafts a day if you hung out awhile). The owner knows his stuff inside and out and the kitchen rocks with old time favorite Vietnamese food and often some exotic preparation you never knew. Make the pilgrimage and youíll find yourself salivating for the next visit!
An and the whole Mekong family ROCK THE PLANET for craft beer, great food, giving back to the community. We are TOTALLY LUKCY BASTARDS for knowing the place. Not the best in the US, or the world---BEST BEER BAR/RESTAURANT IN THE UNIVERSE
Addendum:as someone who LOVES beer and its one of two places Iíve rated perfect scores (see the Brick Store in GA), just wanted to append this note and add some context, Mekong is such a special place that is so loved by this community for its food, beer, hang out aspects as well as its community involvement (lots of charitable interaction, at least half dozen community organizations meet in the room off the side for free, sponsorship of the home brewers club, the Dragon Boat race etc)-- if you havenít been there you MUST go if at all possible---its worth a special trip. :-)
Iíve drunk all around the world, and must say this place is the best Iíve been among some pretty sweet hangs--Temple Bar, The Brick Store,Falling Rock etc. If one can give a perfect score, this one is it! Thanks to ratebeer for giving folks who truly love beer AND have found ratebeer through an incredible place and the publicity around their ranking a chance to have a voice on the site. If the numbers to ratebeer swell as I hope, and if they had more Mekongs in their life youíd probably continue to see more high rankings (AND more beer worship in the world). For what its worth....cheers!
Itís pretty much one of the greatest places on earth if you like Belgian beer. rom standards like Chouffe and Chimay and Gouden Carolus, to really rare stuff that you canít believe An (proprietor) was able to snag a keg of-. The bar is usually deep with beer geeks, and the place smells of vietnamese food (b/c itís a vietnamese restaurant). The two go well together. An is a master barkeep and will be able to recommend your next beer in a heartbeat if you can tell him what you like and donít like. The backup bar guys are pretty good too. Itís a MUST SEE if you come to Richmond.
Mekong is an incredible establishment. Great food, service, staff and of course beer. Their Draft list is second to none. Wonderful selection of rare bottled beer. A definite stop on any beer enthusiastís list. Stop by and see An Mekong for an incredible experience.
