Gourmet pizza shops are beginning to pop up all over town. Mellow Mushroom is one of the best.
It is located at the end of a tiny strip mall off Polaris Parkway, but not over towards the mall where everything is too hectic. It has its own little parking lot, not very big but parking has never been an issue.
The inside is pretty interesting. It is decked out in a hippie theme. There are homages to Salvador Dali, The Grateful Dead, Jim Morrison, Hunter S. Thompson and more. In the center of the restaurant there is a huge wooden psychedelic mushroom. Naturally, classic rock and 60ís-70ís music is featured.
The pizza dough is tossed into the air by the cooks that work just behind an open counter.
Just like everywhere, the bar taps rotate, but many seem to be semi permanent beers. During my last visit yesterday there were about 5 Bellís taps, Double Cream Stout, Pale Ale, Oberon, Two Hearted and Lager of the Lakes. Above that there is Founderís Seasonals, this time was Double Trouble, Flying Dog Seasonals, Horn Dog Barleywine, Thirsty Dog, Columbus Brewing Company Hop Odyssey, The Brew Kettle (Ive never seen this on tap anywhere before). Plenty of bottles are available also, but nothing phenomenal. Some highlights were Celebrator and 60 and 90 min.
Yesterday the service was slow. It was pretty busy when we got there at about 1:30. Our waiter said it was his second day and he was having problems keeping everything straight. While our order was correct and everything, we werent able to finish and leave before 3:00.
There are a few other gourmet pizza shops in Columbus and many of them feature a lot of good beer, but this one is one of my favorites. If you are out in Polaris and in the mood for pizza or a decent pint, this is worth a stop.

(Visited 02/2009 and several times since): Visited this newly-opened restaurant over the weekend and early indications are it is a good fit for the area. It is located on Polaris but on the other side of I-71, so away from the mall traffic. There is a decent-sized private lot in the plaza.
The interior has a sanitized stoner vibe. Grateful Dead bears and psychadelic colors are offset by flat screen TVs and sports bar-type accoutrements. The bar is toward the center of the space, with restaurant seating everywhere else.
The beer selection is pretty impressive. There are around 36 taps with local/regional brewers like Columbus Brewing, Great Lakes, Bellís and Buckeye represented. Other craft brewers like Stone, Rogue, Lagunitas, Harpoon etc are also represented. As for bottles there are around 80, again with good regional/national craft brewer representation. As for imports there are a couple from the UK, Belgium and Germany primarily.
Service was pretty slow on a Saturday between lunch and dinner. It should be noted that my original pint of Hopslam was replaced with a mug that was a good 2oz smaller than a pint. Not a big deal maybe, but with a table of 10 people and $4-$4.50 a pint it adds up. They either need to get more glassware, wash it faster or adjust prices accordingly. Hopefully they will work the kinks out soon, but contrasted with the other new pizza/beer place I visited last week (Deweyís), Mellow Mushroom seemed to be less organized.
As for the pizza, it is good. I tried the White pizza and it was enjoyable.
Overall I would recommend visiting this place on the north end of Columbus. Despite some minor complaints they are continuing the trend of opening new restaurants with a serious consideration in stocking good beers.

Good draft selection with great prices. Of course, the pizza is great too. Server knew a surprisingly good deal about the beer on draft.

This was my 3rd Mellow location that I have visited and by far was the nicest. It was open and airy, the service was good as was the food. The beer selection was well above average and you canít beat the location, its right in the middle of everything.Take a break from all your shopping and sit down and enjoy a pizza and beer.

Very nice new location in the ever popular Polaris Mall area. Nice large interior. Funly decorated for family. Our server was outstanding. The food was above average. I had the handmade soft pretzels and they were awesome. Pizza was good. Beer list was pretty impressive all and all. Lots of neat things in bottles. Nice patio as well. Definitely worth a visit if you are in teh area and a great option if traveling with children and want decent beer. Combine it with a trip to From the Vine which is a mere 10 minutes or less away, and you are golden!
