74 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 9/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 16/20 Shep133 (26) St. Louis, Missouri | September 11, 2012 This is easily the best beer store in Northern Minnesota, that isn’t in Duluth. It’s a must stop for anyone in the Boundary Waters area. The owner knows his stuff and will help you get what you need. Probably the only store up here with Surly. | 66 AMBIANCE 2/5 SERVICE 6/10 SELECTION 10/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 15/20 sthlm (133) Iowa | January 9, 2011 Stopped by here on a Saturday afternoon in January. Not too much to look, inside or out, but not objectionable either. One of the employees just looked at me as I walked around, the other unenthusiastically asked me what I wanted. Selection is very solid for northern Minnesota. Pretty much the full line of Surly (including bottles of Smoke), Goose Island, Bells, Deschutes, and a lot of other random stuff. The beer is really randomly placed throughout the coolers, with most of it not having any pricing information. Despite its shortcomings, this is still one of the best liquor stores in the northlands. It falls well short of Warehouse Liquors in Duluth, and isn’t as good as Jerry’s in Grand Rapids, but it is better than Rocket in Virginia. | 68 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 6/10 SELECTION 10/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 6/10 OVERALL 15/20 tyler_mn (67) SLP, Minnesota | May 18, 2010 The best place near the BWCA for craft beer. Possibly the best place north of Duluth for beer. Mike’s is the only place in N. MN where you (used to) be able to get Surly. They would make a trip down to the Cities every few weeks just for Surly cans. Not too shabby a selection for that area of MN. Bells, Avery, New Holland, Ommegang... Not too much in the way of imports. Prices a tad on the high side, but that’s to be expected. Didn’t interact w/ any employees but the cashier, and he was quite friendly and seemingly a beer geek. Definitely worth a stop if you’re heading to the BWCA or doing some camping in the Superior National Forest. |
