96 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 14/15 FOOD 10/10 VALUE N/A OVERALL 20/20 JerryCerveny (1) , New Zealand | May 25, 2009 Visited Modra Hvezda mid May 2009 the place, especially the large beer-garden in the back was packed. The menu is very traditional Czech and has detailed English translation for every dish, this we found is not very common in most Restaurants in Czech’ with only a vague description being the rule. The food selection is amazing with lots of local specialities and my favourite game dishes. The pricing we found for Czech to be very reasonable and this is applicable to food and drink, especially in comparison to Prague and Plzen. A standard beer (0.5l) was czk26.00, in Prague we paid as much as czk90.00 and at the Prague airport bar we paid czk145.00. The service was also of a high standard, we were being served by a very jung waiter with basic English but this was not a problem because of his friendly and easy going demeanour it was easy to communicate using hand and feet. The owner ended up giving us a mid night tour of his pride and joy. A great experience all round. Some of the beers a bit samey and bland the tmave and polotmave were good | 80 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 12/15 FOOD N/A VALUE N/A OVERALL 16/20 3fourths (1082) Boulder, Colorado | December 6, 2011 Excellent large space and most excellent beer. Located right on the main square of Dobrany. 7 draft beers on my visit, nearly all in good shape and a couple of them quite delicious and constructed with care. Food is your typical Czech stuff. Pre-filled PET bottles to go. No open WIFI. Apparently I missed the famous surly waitress on my trip. Better luck next time! | 78 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 12/15 FOOD 9/10 VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 15/20 TheGrandMaster (105) Auckland, New Zealand | August 10, 2009 One of my favourite brewpubs on my Czech Republic visit, and seemingly very popular on our lunchtime visit. A good range of well made beers, good service, outdoor setting, and probably my best Czech (something without dumplings!). | 78 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 11/15 FOOD N/A VALUE N/A OVERALL 16/20 mullet (224) Melbourne, Australia | November 16, 2007 Modrá is right - this place is seriously blue, with purple flowers all about. It reminds me of my Grandma’s place. Otherwise it’s a lovely pub - quite beatiful really. It was very quiet when we were there, but I can imagine it getting pretty crowded with the locals on a Sunday. I think it was next to the church too, which would help in that respect. Anyway it’s a pretty large place with loads of outdoor seats out the back, and pretty classy as pivnizub says. Some of the super high-gravity stuff and the cherry beer looked pretty scary but the standard beers are fantastic. I have a feeling I ate something here but I can’t recall, the menu is definitely standard Czech with a few more classy/expensive dishes thrown in. motelpogo made me buy a t-shirt for something like €5 but I wear it lots now (it’s blue too). Top place. | 76 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 11/15 FOOD 7/10 VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 15/20 Cuso (94) Bratislava, Slovak Republic | September 19, 2011 Nice place in Dobrany. Good selection of own brewed beers. Nice ambiance, food was good, service was very friendly. I bought some beers with me. Prices are reasonable. Good place. | 76 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 6/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD 7/10 VALUE N/A OVERALL 16/20 Glouglouburp (345) Montreal, Quebec | November 27, 2008 A super clean, super nice brewpub that is very different from just about all other places I’ve visited in Czech Republic. Big woody furniture, almost classy. Unusually sparkling clean for a brewpub. Seven taps!!! May not seem like a lot for the North-American reader but 7 taps is A LOT of taps in a Czech Republic brewpub where 1 to 4 taps is the norm. On the downside the waitress was very rude, the worst service I’ve had in Czech Republic. She didn’t make any effort to help us and seemed exasperated because tourists (us) didn’t speak the language. However the friendly brewer erased the bad score I was going to give for the service. That guy is amazing. He phoned a friend of his who spoke our language and we had a long conversation with the brewer with his friend on the phone acting as the translator. How’s that for an experience!! Most beers were good. Food was good. Average food menu for lunch but the dinner food menu is quite extensive. A Must! Super 12 svetle, more a german pils than a bohemian pilsner, the distance from the border and the abundance of german speaking guests visiting the place can explain that. Ok food, rather hit and miss. Nice garden and cool brewery to visit (as well as a beer museum next door which just opened in summer 2012). A must visit while in the Pilzen area. | 72 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 6/10 SELECTION 12/15 FOOD 7/10 VALUE N/A OVERALL 15/20 MartinT (521) Montreal, Quebec | June 20, 2008 Check out my article to get pics and comments about this most impressive brewpub just south of Plzen: http://www.ratebeer.com/Beer-News/Article-717.htm. |
