They had Mongo on draft.. need I say more? Mellow atmosphere, better than average food, hoppy beers. Philly classic.

Well Super Busy Establishment..Perhaps A Testament ToTheir Brew Options, Unfortunately As A Result it Was Super Loud But Perhaps Philly Beer Week Didn’t Help...Despite This The Staff Seemed To Handle Our Well.

Some wonderful stuff here, made better by the fact that you can carry any bottle on their list out on offsales - picked up a bottle of Firestone PNC here to take home. Was here during Beer Week and unfortunately some of their great stuff was taken up by New Belgian stuff I’d had before but it was all made up by the fact they had Pliny the Elder on tap as well as some other Russian River and good stuff. Friendly service, and bottle list is extensive and full of good stuff. Unfortunate they don’t do taster flights, as when their full menu is on there would be a lot of stuff to get through. Sometimes they do half pints. Great hole in the wall vibe here, with typical cramped Philly atmosphere that makes for friendly place.

The so-so: small, narrow downtown hole-in-the wall space gets too crowded too early and only has 20 taps. The music is too loud but I still managed to strike up a shouting-voice conversation. The good: the service can keep up with the crowds and knows the beer and food menus. The food is upscale pub grub with a European flair. The place manages to have a bit of a traditional Belgian feel to it. The great: the 20 taps are well chosen with occasional selections only available a few places in the world. The beer menus have a listing of what’s up next even before a tapped keg blows. The bottle list is fairly extensive. The prices are reasonable for the quality of the fare.

So very torn on this place. Out of the 4-6 visits we’ve made over the years it seems like the people working the front always have such an attitude of entitlement and general douchiness; then once you actually get a place to sit (either at the bar or a table) the staff seem very friendly and knowledgeable. The food has ranged from good to great (love the charcuterie) and the draft lists are always impressive with a cellar list, that if you can get what you want, is great. Personally I would much rather go for lunch or when its less crowded as everyone seems a little less stressed but who knows maybe you just need to know people or something. Either way worth a visit.

Like it is often the case with renown beer bars I was initially disappointed when I first walked in. A bit dark and without a nice open space, this small bar is divided in a few small sections and as such lacks an overall atmosphere. This type of setup means a bar that is more cozy than lively. 2 bars, excellent list of taps (as I expected) and a pretty good bottle selection. However do not expect too many ‘cool’ IIPAs/Stouts/etc, the taps and bottles are both focused on Belgian beers, both real Belgian beers and American Belgian beers. I did get a Flying Fish Exit 9 on tap which was a bit outside the usual Belgian theme. No need to list the beers we had since they obviously change from week to week. Suffice to say that PA is a good state for beer availability/distribution and Monk’s Café go the extra mile to go beyond the already excellent State distribution. I appreciated the lack of taster flights (others didn’t), I say let’s drink some beer the way they are meant to be drunk. We had lunch there, the somewhat extensive menu is very much Belgian food inspired, not your typical greasy America pub fare. It may not be the watering hole party place I was hoping for, but this is a damn nice cozy bar with a superb selection. I like.

Monk’s café: What à place! Extensive beer menu with interesting tap selection separated in two rooms with a very Belgian feel to them. Prices are quite decent. Belgian menu offered with nice desert selection. A must in Philadelphia.

What else needs to be said? It’s my sanctuary when in Philly. The Beer Bible is extensive and varied. The tap selection is always wonderful. I like the mussels and frites and the burgers are great.
